2 Soul Soul music was a combination of gospel and R&B music that began in the late 1950’s and reached its peak in the 1960’s in the United States. Soul music became particularly popular during the Civil Rights Movement because it was performed by primarily African Americans. Contrary to the “rock-n-roll” style that was frowned upon by whites in America, soul music showed African- Americans in a new light. They were able to express their feelings in a way that wasn’t nearly as provocative as rock-n-roll might have been. Some popular soul music artists include Ray Charles, James Brown, Sam Cooke, and Aretha Franklin. These major artists, along with hundreds of others, helped to advance to popularity throughout the 1960’s. Aretha Franklin actually won 18 “Grammy Awards” in music genres related to soul, the latest coming Clearly, soul music has lasted in America and still remains a very alive genre of music.

3 The Facts Gospel groups in the 40’s and 50’s often used the term “soul” as part of their name However, Ray Charles is credited with creating soul music with multiple hits starting with “I Got a Woman,” in 1954 The music was a bit slower to catch on, but it was solidified after Solomon Burke’s early 1960’s recordings for Atlantic Records that defined the style Aretha Franklin continued the popularity of soul music through the late 1960’s with her hits such as “I Never Loved a Man” and “Respect” Soul music was said to have been created in northern United States cities. Chicago in particular is said to be the birthplace of soul music. However, other cities such as New York, Detroit, and Memphis caught on. Soul music was a driving force of the Civil Rights Movement, because it showed African-Americans outside of their typical “rock-n-roll” style that was frowned upon by white, middle and upper class parents.
