1 Rules of Isolines

2 SWBAT: Determine the rules of drawing and reading isolines
SWBAT: Determine the rules of drawing and reading isolines. Apply the rules to map reading activities.

3 Do Now: Describe why topographic maps are useful.

4 Topo map rules: (Isoline Rules)
There is a contour interval: difference in elevation between contour lines There is an index contour at times -Lines never touch or cross Lines never stop except at the end of a map Rule: If the numbers are bigger in the middle of the map and smaller on the outside of the map draw circles If the numbers are random (no pattern) draw lines

7 Topo map rules: Contour lines make a “V” shape where a river crosses them. The “V” always points upstream (opposite the way the river is flowing). When the lines are close together the area is steep, when the lines are far apart the area is gentle

9 Some common topo map features:
9.) Hill = enclosed circles 10.) Minima and maxima 10 20 40 30

10 Depression (hole in ground)

Homework: Complete the handout.

18 What does the pointing of the contour lines tell us about river flow?
The elevation The speed of the river The source of the river The direction the river is flowing

19 True or False Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down
Contour lines show us the elevations and the shape of the land on a map. True
