Chapter 15: Thermal Energy Section 2: Heat
2
*Heat: transfer of thermal energy from one object to another, when objects are different temperatures *Always moves from warmer to cooler http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Mr+P arr+conduction&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail& mid=197E89FE20B92CFBD8E4197E89FE20B9 2CFBD8E4 http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Mr+P arr+conduction&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail& mid=197E89FE20B92CFBD8E4197E89FE20B9 2CFBD8E4
3
Conduction: transfer of thermal energy by direct contact *Particle collide w/neighboring particles *Occurs most easily in solids and liquids – molecules are closer
4
Radiation: thermal energy transferred by electromagnetic waves *Can occur in empty space and in solids, liquids, and gases *Sun/fireplaces warm objects emit more radiation than cool
5
Convection: transfer of thermal energy by movement of atoms from one part of material to another *Transferring Thermal Energy by Convection *Boiling water warm less dense water rises, cooler water sinks (cycle – repeats) 3 Ways Heat Can Travel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y3mfAG Vn1c&list=PL170CF66C68FA97E0
6
Conductors: any material that easily transfers thermal energy (metals) Insulators: material that thermal energy does not flow through easily
7
Specific Heat: of a material is amount of thermal energy needed to raise temperature of 1 kg by 1 degree Celsius. *More thermal energy is needed for high specific heat material (water) *Low specific heat (sand) http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Specific+Hea t+Explained&FORM=RESTAB#view=detail&mid=1BD5 66C81F3D9A58DC221BD566C81F3D9A58DC22
