3 The situation in Germany
By 1923 the German economy was in ruins because of hyperinflation and the French occupation of the Rhur. This gave Hitler the perfect opportunity to try and overthrow the Weimar Republic as he thought it was on the verge of collapse and not strong enough to stop him

4 What Happened? On 8th November 1923 Hitler, along with 3000 men interrupted a meeting the Munch beer-hall and forced leaders of the Bavarian state government to take part in the Putsch Once they had left, the leaders changed their mind and reported Hitler to the police

5 What happened next? The next day, Hitler and General Ludendorff (a German war-time hero) led the Nazis into Munich. Hitler believed that te army and police would join the rebellion but instead the police open fired on him, killing 16 Nazis

6 What were the consequences?
Ludendorff was not found guilty but Hitler was sentenced to 5 year although he ended up serving 5 months in very comfortable conditions where he wrote Mein Kamp (my struggle) He made long speeches in his trial which made him a national hero Hitler learned power in Germany could only be gained through the ballot box
