2 History The Institute for Statistics was established in November, The Institute was relocated to Montreal in November 2001. UIS only partially funded by UNESCO – many other projects and funding sources. The UIS website was first created as part of the UNESCO site in Paris and adopted the UNESCO common look and feel in 2001/2002. The UIS website was physically re-hosted in Montreal in 2003 – UNESCO common look and feel was intentionally maintained. 2003/2004 has focussed on improving statistical tools and improvements to basic navigation (site flattening).

4 Overall Website Goals To be THE reference source for statistics in UNESCO’s areas of competence. Highlight UIS work (projects/activities as well as outputs) and: Relevance to policy Donor involvement Country / region UNESCO sector linkages Focus on core business – statistics, statistical activities, statistical analysis, and related work in this area. Provide a high quality statistical dissemination environment targeted to the needs of a broad spectrum of users Be an integral part of an International Statistical System Provide working environment for collaborative activities Collaborative examples: Private extranet with the world bank includes a discussion forum to review and discuss data that has been integrated from multiple sources in order to create new indicator definitions.

9 2. Structure of information and editorial workflow
The structure of website content by Theme by Region/sub-region/country by Partner /community by Office/Institute unit/sectionby UNESCO strategy/programmes by Service provided (statistics, publications, clearing house,…) The typical work-flow for getting content onto website Structure: Thematic (UIS projects, UNESCO sectors, Statistical processes, Region / Country) Workflow: content is written by analysts and statisticians. Some focal points in most subject areas have been trained and have editor priveleges.

14 3. Management The main roles of those implicated in running your website. Financing your website development (regular budget/ extra budgetary sources) Main roles: Content providers: Project managers, Statistiticians, Analysts, and Communication officer; Editors: Communication officer, Web master Financing of website is thru regular budget. Most costs are attributed to statistical dissemination activities. Promotion of content: - passive (business cards, letterhead, links in publications, links in ppt’s, requesting citations from redistribution agents, …) - active (reviewing sites linked from – should be linked from; hosting extranet and project activities on site to draw users; managing professional reputation of UIS and UIS statistics – validates content; partnering with key stakeholders to raise profile (wbank, oecd, …), in process of implementing subscription services)
