From: Diseases Caused by Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Red Book® 2015, 2015 Figure Legend: Skin and soft tissue infections caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) usually occur after traumatic injury, surgery, or cosmetic procedures, which may expose a wound to soil, water, or medical devices occasionally contaminated with environmental mycobacteria. Although the epidemiology and clinical presentations of NTM responsible for skin and soft tissue infections differ, some species (Mycobacterium avium complex, M kansasii, M xenopi, and M marinum) have been reported worldwide, whereas others (M ulcerans) have limited geographic distribution. This figure shows M marinum infection of the arm of a fish-tank worker. M marinum causes diseases in many fish species and is distributed worldwide. It is an opportunistic pathogen of humans, in whom infection is infrequent and occurs by direct injury from fish fins or bites or after cutaneous trauma and subsequent exposure to contaminated water or other sources of infection (shrimp, shellfish, frogs, turtles, dolphin, eels, and oysters).
