Rachael Wood Mrs. Barber 3JB St Margaret's C.E Junior School ALL ABOUT THE GREEK THEATRE

2 Introduction The Greek theatre history began in the 6th Century BCE in Athens with festivals honoring their Gods. A God Dionysus was honored with a festival called ‘City Dionysia’. In Athens, during this festival, men used to perform songs to welcome Dionysus. Plays were only presented at City Dionysus Festivals.

3 Overview You will learn about: The God of Theatre
The different types of plays The name of the special Theatre The Dressing Rooms Costumes and Masks

4 God of Theatre The God of Theatre was called Dionysus. He was also known by his Roman name Bacchus. He appears to be a god who has two distinct origins – Theatre and Wine. A festival of Dionysus was always held in the spring when vines would start to become leaves. It became one of the most important events of the year and it’s main focus was the theatre. Most plays were written to be performed at the feast of Dionysus

5 Types of Plays Tragedy – this meant it was a sad play. If the actor was sad they would be wearing a dark and sad mask. The masks would be made from dry clay and would be painted and carved to the face they needed. Comedy – this meant it was a happy play. If the actor was happy then they would be wearing a bright and cheerful mask.

6 Name of the Theatre The name of the special theatre is called the amphitheatre. The theatre is open air instead of indoors.

7 The Dressing Rooms The dressing rooms are where actors get changed ready for acting. All the actors were men and no women were allowed to act in plays. The changing rooms are probably behind the stage

8 Costumes and Masks Masks showed the audience what part the actor was playing. They also showed when the male actors were playing the female roles. The masks made the actors voices louder.
