Today’s Activity After the lecture use the reading which I will distribute to help fill in the two charts which we created When filling out the chart for the Four Noble Truths you should write the Truth and then summarize the information in the remaining space

The Four Noble Truths The Four noble Truths make up the core teachings of Buddhism All the other teachings of Buddhism flow from the ideas contained in the Four Noble Truths Let’s look at the first of the Noble Truths

The First Noble Truth The First Noble Truth is Life is Suffering
The word associated with suffering is the Sanskrit word duhkha The first noble truth is essential to the Buddhist approach to the world

The First Noble Truth Suffering can mean many different things
Such as: pain, old age, sickness, fear, frustration, embarrassment, anger, ect The idea that all life is suffering might seem sad or pessimistic, but it is not

The First Noble Truth The idea that suffering exists is a realistic view Buddhism offers a way to avoid suffering and be truly happy

The Second Noble Truth The Second Noble Truth is Suffering is due to attachment The word associated with attachment is the Sanskrit word trishna Attachments in this context might mean something different

The Second Noble Truth Attachments means desire for or dependence on people or things Happiness cannot be achieved if one has too much attachments to worldly things

The Second Noble Truth The Second Noble Truth says that suffering is CAUSED by this attachment People will suffer because their attachments give them a sense of craving This constant craving cannot ever be satisfied

The Third Noble Truth The Third Noble Truth is Attachment/Suffering Can be overcome True happiness and contentment CAN be achieved according to the Third Noble Truth This is perhaps the most positive sounding of the Four Noble Truths

The Third Noble Truth Nirvana means letting go or “blowing out”
Overcoming attachment/suffering is known as Nirvana The Third Noble Truth is all about accepting the world and not holding onto the past or possessions

The Third Noble Truth One achieves nirvana by giving up craving, attachment, and living in the present By doing this people will have more times and energy to focus elsewhere Most importantly helping other people

The Fourth Noble Truth The Fourth Noble Truth is The way to Nirvana is the Middle Way This is perhaps the most simple and straightforward of the Noble Truths

The Fourth Noble Truth The way to end suffering and achieve nirvana is by following the Middle Way By following the Middle Way people can break away from all the things which cause suffering

The Middle Way According to the Fourth Noble Truth the way to achieve nirvana is by following the Middle Way But what is the Middle Way and how does one follow it? Don’t worry about a thing Buddha provided something called the Eightfold Path

The Eightfold Path We are going to look at a good summary of the Eightfold Path You will be filling out the eight sectioned circle which we created earlier in class Let’s look at how to do this

Today’s Activity When filling out the Eightfold Path you should write exactly what is in BOLD and ITALICIZED Rewrite in your own words what is ONLY ITALICIZED We will go through these one at a time

Eightfold Path Bellwork
According to the Eightfold Path should people gossip? According to the Eightfold Path should people have a job that is dishonest and causes harm? According to the Eightfold Path should people want to free themselves from attachment? CA: NO NO Yes
