6 Stereotypes & "ing" Generalizations (exaggerated) or assumptions that people make about the characteristics of all members of a group, based on an image (often wrong) about what the people in that group are like. Also based on first assumptions/impressions. Images from mass media or reputations passed on by parents, peers and other members of society. Its what we do as humans, often with little realization that we are doing it! Can be positive and negative!

7 Generalizations are positive so that way we are able to interact
effectively… We must have some idea of what people are likely to be like, which behaviors will be considered acceptable and which ones are not. (norms & roles)

8 What is there to know about me?
What about them?

9 Prejudice is often aimed at "out-groups.
Other definitions… Prejudiceis an opinion, prejudgment or attitude about a group or its individual members. A prejudice can be positive, but in our usage refers to a negative attitude. Prejudices are often accompanied by ignorance, fear or hatred. Prejudices are formed by a complex psychological process that begins with attachment to a close circle of acquaintances or an "in-group" such as a family. Prejudice is often aimed at "out-groups. Discrimination is behavior that treats people unequally because of their group memberships. Discriminatory behavior, ranging from slights to hate crimes, often begins with negative stereotypes and prejudices.

10 We now view these individuals as being
Positive Firemen, police officers, EMS personnel and port authority officials since 9-11 (LeGars 2003) We now view these individuals as being un-selfish, caring and heroic.

11 Who is “them”?

12 Negative Stereotyping?
Our own view of the stereotype… Do you dislike the person (or view them negatively) based on..

13 “But I Gotta Be Me!”

14 Once people get to know a person
“from the other side”, they often will determine that the other is not nearly as bad as they originally assumed.

15 What do you know about your 4-H Campers???

16 Can you accept me?

17 Make different assumptions… They arrive helpless.
2. Life today is not a playground, it’s battle ground. 3. They are afraid. 4. Morality, integrity & humility are no longer present… wrong is right! 5. Confidence is thin! Show acceptance for that feeling.

18 Ways to turn down the Stereotyping!
*Humanize= empathy; examine our assumptions *Dialogue= talk about your feelings, encourage tolerance based on your own behavior/talk, don’t accept put-downs *Educate= paint fair pictures of others, develop age and situation appropriate responses to conflicts or differences, use activity to introduce differences

19 “Welcoming Environment”
Offer a “Welcoming Environment” To 4-H’ers Attending Camp
