1 This may lead to diarrhea and malabsorption, or it may be evidenced only by villous atrophy on jejunal biopsy. The approaches to treatment of this disease include sulfapyridine or dapsone and a gluten-free diet. As mentioned above, children treated with dapsone or sulfapyridine must be carefully monitored for the development of hemolytic anemia. Adherence to a diet that contains no gluten is difficult but, if accomplished, will often lead to prolonged remission.
