1 HazMat Decontamination Team Recruitment
Emergency Management Program

2 Why do we need on-call decontamination teams here at BIDMC?

3 Tokyo, March 1995 Sarin gas attack on subway system

4 St. Luke’s International Hospital, Tokyo:
500 patients presenting in first hour 641 patients over the course of the first day Nearly 5000 patients self-presenting to hospitals throughout Tokyo For comparison: on an average day (24 hour period) the BIDMC Emergency Department sees 150 patients

5 Some lessons learned: Terrorism is real, and could likely involve chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear elements After an event, some victims will arrive via ambulance, but many will self-present Before receiving medical treatment, victims will need to be decontaminated As a hospital community, we will all be affected
