1 INVEST An Outcome Based Model
STUDENT GROWTH Session 1 October __, 2012 1

2 Purpose of INVEST Aldine ISD knows that teachers are the single most import factor in a child’s academic progress. That’s why we are building a state-of-the-art evaluation system to improve teacher quality and support.

3 Who Created INVEST? A generous grant from the Arnold Foundation enabled groups of Aldine teachers, administrators, and consultants to meet monthly to study, learn and design INVEST.

4 Implementing INVEST 2011 2012 2013 2014 ▪Aldine Educators
Design INVEST ▪Training & Pilot (Domains 1-4) 34 Schools] ▪Test & Design Aldine Student Growth Model (Domain 5) ▪Full Implementation (Domains 1-4) ▪Student Growth Implementation-Domain 5 (TBD) ▪Full Implementation (Domains 1-5)

5 INVEST Goals More accurately represent teacher performance levels.
Increase the proportion of “highly effective” and “effective” teachers. Reduce teacher attrition rates by half.

6 Student Growth Percentiles Student learning growth
The Parts of INVEST Measured by Student Growth Percentiles Measured by Danielson Framework a b Student learning growth Classroom teaching Remind Participants of the following: Part A (Framework) is being piloted this year in 34 campuses and will be used for accountability purposes. This part of the framework and has been the focus of previous training. Part B (Student Growth) will only be reported for Pilot school professionals during the current school year. Monthly learning opportunities will be shared with all campuses to learn more about this measure.

7 Student Learning Growth: Aldine Growth Model
1000 850 Commended Performance 650 38% STARR MATH SCALE SCORE 565 SGP = 62 505 Met Standard There is a distinct difference between achievement and student growth. This students 3rd grade achievement was In fourth grade, the achievement level was 565. Growth is measured by calculating the difference between a student’s achievement level from one year to the next – 565 = 60 (the student’s growth) The vertical dots signify students that started at the same starting point in one grade level. They are listed vertically to demonstrate their growth from one year to the next. This particular student’s student growth percentile (SGP) is 62. There were 38% of the students that grew more and 62% grew less. 62% 450 Did Not Meet Standard 250 Grade 3 Grade 4

8 Reporting SGPs for Groups
Last name SGP Hernandez 21 Bing 24 Johnson 27 Harrison 32 Morales 34 Portis 47 Jackson 58 Stills 61 Lund 63 Morales 74 James 81 Andres 88 Sims 95 Note that the SGPs are sorted from lowest to highest. The point where 50% of students have a higher SGP, and 50% have a lower SGP is the median. Once all the SGPs have been calculated for each student in a classroom, the students are listed in ranking order from lowest to highest. The median of the ranking order will be used to measure the teacher’s impact. In this case, Jackson (58) would be the median since 50 % of the students scored higher and 50% have a lower SGP.

9 Student Learning Growth: Aldine Growth Model
This is a sample of the report teachers will be able to access. The data will include other grade or content level data to use as a benchmark.

10 Final INVEST Rating = Classroom Teaching + Student Learning Growth
When full implementation is approved, the final rating will consider both Part A (Framework) and Part B (Student Growth) for a professionals final summative rating for the year.
