Objectives The objective of this experiment is to find the value of the Gas Constant R experimentally by reacting Magnesium metal with dilute Hydrochloric acid. The Gas constant is the proportionality constant in the ideal gas equation.                                        R =  PV / nT (atm.L / mole.k) The chemical reaction taking place in the experiment is :  Mg(s)   + 2H+ (aq)     Mg2+  (aq) +  H2 (g)

5 Procedure We took a 500ml Beaker and filled it with distilled water.
We were given a piece of magnesium and then we measured the mass of it. We filled a burette with diluted hydrochloric acid and placed magnesium on the tip of the burette. Then we turned the burette over into the beaker filled with distilled water, making sure that no air enters the burette. As soon as the solution reached magnesium, a reaction took place and hydrogen gas started evolving. We waited till the hydrogen gas had completely evolved and while this process was still going on we took the temperature of the solution.

6 Conclusion In conclusion, we did further calculations to obtain the Gas constant R. By this we learned how to do those calculations to obtain the pressure, volume, temperature and number of moles so we can find R and derive its units. The formula we used is: R = PV/NT , atm.L / mole.K

7 Thank You!
