2 Healing a Man Born Blind
John 9

3 He made mud/clay! Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. (John 9:6-7 ESV)

4 “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. (Isaiah 42:6-7 ESV) As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5 ESV)

5 they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on will them will lead them, and by springs of water guide them (Isaiah 49:10 ESV) Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (John 6:35 ESV)

6 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:11 ESV) I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11 ESV)

7 The light of the world, the bread of life, and the good shepherd are all OT terms for the Messiah and His efforts But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?” Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? (Romans 9:20-21 ESV)

8 Remember that you have made me like clay; and will you return me to the dust? (Job 10:9 ESV)
“Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots! Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’ or ‘Your work has no handles’? (Isaiah 45:9 ESV) “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the LORD. Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. (Jeremiah 18:6 ESV)

9 As Jesus is the light of the world, the bread of life,
and the good shepherd He likewise identifies himself here as the worker in mud, the Potter.

10 He washed & came back seeing
and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. (John 9:7 ESV)

11 He washed & came back seeing The same thing happens to you and me
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened (Romans 1:21 ESV) In rejecting God one’s foolish heart is darkened

12 He washed & came back seeing The same thing happens to you and me
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. (Ephesians 4:17-18 ESV) Sinful ones are darkened in their understanding

13 He washed & came back seeing The same thing happens to you and me
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13-14 ESV) Jesus brings us out of darkness into his kingdom

14 He washed & came back seeing The same thing happens to you and me
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9 ESV) We’re called out of darkness into his marvelous light

15 He washed & came back seeing The same thing happens to you and me
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8 ESV) Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. (Ephesians 5:11 ESV)

16 The Works of God Were Displayed in the Man
And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. (John 9:2-3 ESV) What was the “works” that were displayed?

17 The Works of God Were Displayed in the Man
Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” (John 6:28-29 ESV)

18 Belief is what was on display
So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” (John 9:24 ESV) TWICE called before religious “professors”

19 Belief is what was on display
They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. (John 9:34 ESV) TWICE called before religious “professors” Labeled, put down, cast out of synagogue

20 Belief is what was on display
His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) (John 9:20-22 ESV)

21 Belief is what was on display
TWICE called before religious “professors” Labeled, put down, cast out of synagogue Family distanced themselves from him

22 Belief is what was on display
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him (John 9:35-38 ESV)

23 Belief is what was on display
TWICE called before religious “professors” Labeled, put down, cast out of synagogue Family distanced themselves from him He remained zealous to know Jesus

24 Belief is what was on display
Everywhere he went… He told what Jesus had done He gave credit to Jesus He stood up for Jesus He told what he knew about Jesus

25 The Potter is still working…
Forming us Reshaping us If WE choose to let Him
