14 Important People: Alonso De Leon - Sent by the Spanish to destroy LaSalle’s fort in East Texas Father Damian Massinet - a Catholic official on De Leon’s expedition who was granted permission to found (start or create) a mission in East Texas Father Francisco Hidalgo - a missionary (a person on a religious mission) of San Juan Bautista, who wrote a letter to the French governor of Louisiana asking the French to build a mission amongst the Tejas Antonio Margil de Jesus - he founded the most successful mission in San Antonio, Mission Jose y San Miguel de Aquayo

15 Mission of Corpus Christi de la Ysleta
Important Mission: Mission of Corpus Christi de la Ysleta Founded by Spanish friars in Mission of Corpus Christi de la Ysleta was the 1st permanent European settlement in Texas.

16 Mission San Antonio De Bexar
Important Mission: Mission San Antonio De Bexar 1718, Presidio San Antonio de Béxar was built on the San Antonio River. The Mission San Antonio de Valero was built a few years later & would become known as the Alamo.

17 Mission San Miguel de los Adaes
Important Mission Mission San Miguel de los Adaes 1719, French troops were ordered to capture East Texas b/c of a war in Europe. They went to Mission San Miguel de los Adaes & captured Spaniards & chickens. A chicken caused a French soldier to be thrown from horse & the Spaniards escaped.

The story was exaggerated & embarrassed the Spanish viceroy, which caused the Spanish to become more determined to hold Texas.

19 Significance of Spanish Mission
The La Salle expedition alerted Spain to France’s interest in Texas. The Spanish decided that if they were to keep Texas, they must occupy it. Spanish missions and settlements provided a stronger hold on Texas than did the French Traders

20 Purpose (Goals) of Mission System
To convert the Native Texans (Native Americans) to Christianity To become loyal citizens of Spain (Native Americans) To hold the land for Spain
