Unit 6 Task 1D Analysis of each research method Rebecca Thomas

2 Why does Friends appeal to such a wide demographic of people?

3 Secondary research For the secondary research I used Google to find out various things about Friends from cast wages to interesting facts about the show. I found this through various articles and websites. Pros You can find in depth articles on Friends easily on the internet. I found many interesting facts about the show through looking at different websites. I wouldn't’t of known quite what a phenomenon ‘The Rachael’ hairstyle was.

4 Cons You only get stone cold facts you don’t get true opinions. Secondary can be very impersonal. Sometimes felt like I was going off on a tangent when writing about all the statistics.

5 Primary research Pros You get to hear real peoples opinions
Having opinions from viewers of the show gives a more personal answer. Questionnaires are a good way to get a majority e.g on an point.

6 Cons When interviewing my mum because I know her so well I think I had pre conceived ideas about what I wanted her to say. Interviewing and asking people I know to do questionnaires did affect my judgment.

7 Conclusion In conclusion I have decided that I prefer to use primary research because I find the answers to be more personal and honest as they’re from real people who have real opinions. These people have experienced watching Friends and have feelings and emotions positive or negative about the show which are useful in my work. There were a few negatives from my primary research, mainly that I think I shouldn't’t have had so many people I know answering my question as I naturally judged it different. Specifically I think interviewing someone as close as my mum wasn't the best idea because without realising I already had ideas in my head of what I thought and wanted her to say, which isn’t fair. From this point I have learnt that next time I do primary research I may ask someone who isn’t as close to me.

8 In regards to the secondary research, although I liked the factual side you get from researching on the internet I don’t think you mostly can get a true answer to your question. Throughout the secondary research I felt like I was going off on a tangent talking about statistics and facts rather than trying to find an answer to my question. This is why overall I preferred primary research and found that it answered my question better than the secondary research did.
