1 Charles Dickens Life and works

2 He was born in 1812 When he was ten his family moved to London.
Here he attended school until his father was sent to prison for debt. Charles was forced to work in a factory. The experience was traumatic. Some years later he went to work as a clerk in a legal office then started to work as journalist.

3 He was the most representative novelist of the Age.
Working as a Journalist gave him a good knowledge of contemporary problems. Serial publication made him immensely popular (Oliver Twist, Hard Times)

He used fiction to denounce devices and evils of his age. He didn’t advocate any fundamental change in the system of Victorian society . He exhorted a considerable influence on the reform movement of the age. In each one of his novels he denounces a problem of the society He mingled humour with pathos.
