1 The fingerprint inside your body
DNA The fingerprint inside your body

2 DNA Basics DNA stands for: Every living thing has DNA
D- Deoxyribose N- Nucleic A- Acid Every living thing has DNA A strand of DNA is too small to see DNA is often called: Blueprint of the cell Long-term information storage Fingerprint inside your body DNA- the genetic information needed in the development and function of all living organisms.

3 DNA Structure DNA looks like a twisted ladder when viewed under a microscope We call this twisted ladder a double helix

4 DNA Structure A strand of DNA has rails and steps like a ladder Rail
Rails- Sugar Phosphate Backbone Steps- Nitrogenous Bases Rail Step

5 A T C G Nitrogen Bases Base Pairing Rule Green bases go with Red bases
Purple bases go with Yellow bases C G Our DNA isn’t really color coded, but each of these bases is structurally different. We give each one a letter.

6 As you can see, each nitrogen base is structurally different!
Nitrogen Bases Four Base Types A- Adenine T- Thymine C- Cytosine G- Guanine As you can see, each nitrogen base is structurally different!

7 Sugar Phosphate Backbone

8 Sugar Phosphate Backbone
Sugar- Deoxyribose Phosphate- P03 (holds the sugars together)

9 Summary Function: The genetic material of the body
Structure: Double helix Length:
