1 A baby begins when an egg cell (ovum) is fertilized by a reproductive cell (sperm) to form a fertilized egg. The new egg cell keeps dividing as you mature. These cells begin to differentiate in structure and function.

2 Uterus – The mother’s womb.
At the end of the first week a baby burrows into the lining of the uterus.

4 Week 2 - a structure grows between the baby and mother’s body called a placenta.

5 Placenta – Keeps the baby attached to wall of the uterus.
Allows for exchanges between the baby’s blood and mother’s blood. Serves as the babies kidneys, lungs, and intestines.

6 Week 3 – The Umbilical Cord forms.
Heart starts beating

7 Umbilical Cord – Three blood vessels.
Where oxygen and nutrients from the mother come through after being filtered by the placenta.

8 Beginning of arms, legs, nose, and cheeks was taking shape.
Week 4 1/5 inch long Beginning of arms, legs, nose, and cheeks was taking shape.

9 Fingers, lungs, trachea, esophagus, and stomach starting to form.
Week 5 ½ inch long. Fingers, lungs, trachea, esophagus, and stomach starting to form. Have muscles!

10 Ears and heart begin to form.

11 All major organs established
Week 7 Toes formed All major organs established Less than an inch long and only 1/6 of an ounce. Look like a baby!

12 Completing somersaults and moving!
Week 8 Slept and exercised Completing somersaults and moving!

13 Lips formed and cheeks get bigger. Open, close mouth, and yawn.
Week 9-10 Lips formed and cheeks get bigger. Open, close mouth, and yawn. Fingernails, taste buds, and fingerprints form.

14 ¾ an ounce and 2 inches long, growing quick!
Week 11 ¾ an ounce and 2 inches long, growing quick! Chin formed. Thymus and lymph nodes developing.

15 Week 12 Ribs visible. 1 ounce and 3 inches long. Make faces Drink

16 6 inches in length and 4 ounces. Mother can feel baby move.
Week 13-16 6 inches in length and 4 ounces. Hair starts growing. Mother can feel baby move.

17 Look very similar to how baby will look when born.
5 Months 10 inches long. Look very similar to how baby will look when born.

18 Eyebrows and eyelashes visible Others can see baby move
6 Months Eyebrows and eyelashes visible Hear noises 12 inches long Others can see baby move

19 Brain can control breathing and swallowing.
