1 Chemistry Is a Physical Science

2 What is Chemistry? Chemistry – “the study of the composition, structure, and properties of matter, the processes that matter undergoes, and the energy changes that accompany these processes” (Davis, Sarquis, Frey and Sarquis 3) Chemistry is all around us! Air phones tablets Food - medicine transportation

3 Questions Asked by Chemists
What makes up matter (Davis et al. 3)? Why do elements and compounds react with each other? Why do substances have color, texture, and sometimes smell? How does the atomic scale relate to the macroscale (large scale) (Davis et al. 3)?

4 How Do Chemists Experiment?
They use a variety of tools: Scanning electron microscope X-ray diffraction Both of these tools show the microstructure (Davis et al. 4) By knowing the microstructure we can understand the macrostructure (what we see on a large scale) (Davis et al. 4) When we understand how matter is structured at the atomic level, we understand why matter behaves the way it does at our level

5 The Branches of Chemistry (Davis et al. 4)
Organic chemistry – mostly carbon containing compounds Inorganic chemistry – compounds that are not organic, sometimes though will have “organic fragments bonded to metals” Physical chemistry – “the study of the properties and changes of matter and their relation to energy”

6 The Branches of Chemistry (Davis et al. 4)
“Analytical chemistry – “the identification of the components and composition of materials” “Biochemistry – the study of substances and processes occurring in living things” Theoretical chemistry – using computers and models to study properties of chemicals and to form new chemicals

7 What exactly is a chemical?
Chemical – “any substance that has a definite composition” (Davis et al. 4) Example: water (H2O), oxygen (O2), ammonia (NH3) Not an example: Milk Pop Cheese

8 Types of Research Basic Research – research done for the sake of knowledge Why is the sky blue? Applied Research – done to solve a problem How can we make a more fuel efficient car? Technological Development – “involves the production and use of products that improve our life” (Davis et al. 5) Catalytic converters (Davis et al. 5)
