1 A Moving Target… Current State of Student Reporting & Analytics
Villanova University Sarah Lodise Shadan Ahmadi-Naini Things are changing… more of appetite for analytics in our executive team and want to ensure the same story is being told with the data Admission implemented Slate and the rest of the admitting offices are following suit Perceptive pushes the data into Banner ERP will be changing and this will have impacts on Financial Aid as Finance and HR go to workday

2 Agenda Governance Operational Reporting and Report Example
Analytics Tools and Dashboards BI Goals for 2018

3 Governance University Analytics Committee
Monthly Meeting: representation from: IT, Enrollment Management, Provost, Finance, HR Project: Data Cookbook (iData) Glossary of terms Use of API (Cognos, etc.) Enrollment Management (EM) structure Admission, Registrar, Financial Aid, Retention, IMG Even as data sources get de-centralized, there is a need to be aware of where data is and how each area is using it

4 Operational Reporting
Tools that get the job done Cognos (with Student ODS challenges) Access, Discoverer, Banner 8x reports (eek!), Slate Report Requests Most users cannot create reports on their own when multiple query items are needed Request process: Put in a ticket first, clarify by /phone BI Analyst (Shadan) does the heavy lifting and works with EM to validate and modify

5 Report Example List of UG level students who are graduating in , , and term with following fields:  Academic Outcome Grad Term ACADEMIC_PERIOD_GRADUATION College COLLEGE Level STUDENT_LEVEL Status STATUS Catalog Year [Academic Study].[CATALOG_ACADEMIC_PERIOD] Name NAME ID ID Major 1 to Major 4 MAJOR, SECOND_MAJOR, THIRD_MAJOR, FOURTH_MAJOR Minor 1 to Minor 4 FIRST_MINOR, SECOND_MINOR, THIRD_MINOR, FOURTH_MINOR Here is the problem:  Student graduated in term with FIN major and catalog year.   Student now is an MBA student - a GB level students with a new catalog year  The record is listed twice in the report . So level = UG from the “Academic Outcome” view does not work right.

6 Report Example Challenging ODS detailed report example Q_AcadOutcome
[Student Detail].[Academic Study].[CATALOG_ACADEMIC_PERIOD]is not null Removed from 1st qry and added it as a filter

7 Report Example Challenging ODS detailed report example

10 Next Steps Goals for 2018 Publish MORE meaningful visual content for decision-makers Continue to migrate away from Discoverer and Access for all levels of reporting Further develop data policies and access (i.e. report request process efficiencies, document data definitions, get the right data in the right hands)
