1 Shape activity Approx 1 period

2 Shape? A a rough picture the distribution of the data

3 Sketching shapes We will give you very quick glimpses of some dot plots one at a time Sketch the shape in the ‘Sketch of Shape’ column on your handout or in your exercise book When you teach this let the students come up with terms to use – introduce statistical terms such as Symmetry, skewness, clusters, spread, peaks , troughs as well as non-statistical words such as mounds, clumps etc Make a list.

4 Sketch of shape Give students a bit of time to draw what they see, next slides go over fast so that they glimpse only – this is to get them to draw their impression, no detail is needed. 1.

22 Reflection: Seeing shape
What did you look for when catching a glimpse of the plot? Are your plots similar to your neighbours?

23 What is shape? How do you describe shape?

24 Vocabulary (WORDS to use when describing SHAPE)
Symmetry – reflection about a middle axis Bell-shaped (do not use “NORMAL”) Skewness- (stretched out on one side) Clusters peaks (higher points) bumps/mounds (a rise in the data, not necessarily a peak) range/spread (big or small) uniform (evenly spread data=rectangular shape) bi-modal (two distinct modes)
