3 About GOIC Founded in 1976, by the GCC Member States
Conceptualized as a knowledge-hub and an industrial investment promotion catalyst for the purpose of industrial diversification and development within the GCC countries. Since inception, the organization’s advisory role has been fundamental in the industrial development of the region: GOIC has played an influential part in identifying and introducing new industries to the region. Its recommendations shaped public policies particularly the unified common industrial strategy that was adopted by all GCC member states. 3

4 Services & Expertise GOIC’s consultancy services enable industrial investors to make well informed business decisions that impart competitive advantages. We Offer: Solutions On: Rationalizing Internal Operations Needs and Costs: Profit Maximization with Cost Reduction. Determining and Locating the Best or Acceptable Means and Resources Needed to achieve Market Competitiveness. Developing a Better Product and Market Selection and Positioning. Elaborating Advanced Techniques on Energy Conservation and Waste Management - Improving Productivity and Protecting the Environment. Insights On: Market Conditions, Future Trends, Demographic and Economic Data, Social, Regulatory and Political Environment and other socio-economic factors. New Industrial Investment Opportunities within the GCC Market. Locating, Screening and Recommending Regional Potential Investments opportunities along with Qualified Business Partners. 4

5 Programs GOIC has developed specialized Programs intended to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the decision making processes. A Program initiated with the assistance of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to work as a match-making mechanism on industrial relations and creation of business contacts between contractors and sub-contractors, usually Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs). A skillful, in-depth assessment of the industrial establishments, carried out by GOIC to achieve potential savings through energy efficiency improvement, productivity improvement, waste minimization and pollution prevention. These assessments cover the establishment’s site, facilities, services and manufacturing operations. The program identifies investment opportunities in various industrial sectors. It seeks to generate and promote new and profitable manufacturing project ideas suitable to region's private sector investor, at regional or national levels, through public events held periodically across the GCC. 5

6 Programs (cont../) The Program is a partnership between GOIC and accredited international and specialized schools, aiming to enhance the individual and organizational capacities for sustainable development in the GCC industrial sector. The program focuses on industrial and economical sectors in the GCC, providing specialized training courses, seminars and workshops for government agencies, investors, industrialists as well experts and individuals. This a highly analytical and consultancy program on trends affecting the GCC socio-economic environment. It offers macroeconomic analysis and forecast of major economic development in the GCC, sectorial research and analysis of industrial development strategies, as well development of trade policies within the GCC member states. An Internet Portal designed to provide the single and easily accessible source of industrial data and information, the first of its kind in the Middle East. The IMI Portal provides a ‘six-in-one tool’ made-up of databases on The Gulf Industries, The Foreign Trade statistics, The Socio-Economic indicators, Investment Opportunities in the Gulf, Technology Providers and Experts in the GCC. 6

7 Alliances & Associations
GOIC has forged alliances and entered into association agreements with a multitude of local, regional and international institutions, both in the public and the private domains. Strategic alliances with prominent international organizations. Partnership and alliance extending to a network of consultants and experts spanning from the American continent to Europe, Australia and India. 7

8 Objectives To reduce GHG effect and maximize the utilization of resources. To help SMIs improving their competitiveness through cost reduction. This to be brought about through identifying opportunities of energy savings and waste reductions in industrial activities throughout the region.

9 Strategic Areas GOIC EP Demand Management & Efficiency Improvement
Energy information GOIC EP Promotion of Alternatives & renewables Address environmental impact of energy use

10 GOIC Energy Efficiency Program
Focus on Energy intensive industries: Metal, Plastic and Food Processing. Awareness campaign and training activities. Established trained and skilled staff. Results showed significant potential for energy savings and waste reductions. The program is still attracting interest.

11 Typical GCC Energy Balance
Oil Production Electricity Generation Refining Locally Industry Household Transportation Distribution EXPORT Gas Processing Natural Gas Exploration LNG Production Oil Exploration

12 Examples of Energy Savings

13 Energy in Industry It is used for: Major Equipment target for savings:
Steam Generation. Air compressors. Refrigeration. Material handling. Lighting Major Equipment target for savings: Boilers. Compressors. Pipes and other equipment insulation Motors and lighting systems

14 Plastic Processing Factory
Example 1 Plastic Processing Factory

15 Plastic Processing Factory
Producing plastic films Two-day visit from a team of three experts. Major processing: casting blow molding and printing. Cooling is used to cool the films. Air pipes are used to carry the cooling water with 350 meter length. Insulation of pipes carrying cooling air will bring the following benefits:

16 Insulation 7o C -38o C 0.075 m 350 m 75.5 Kw 87560 per year
Atmosphere temp 45o C Pipe 7o C Losses -38o C Pipes diameter 0.075 m Length 350 m Heat loss 75.5 Kw Operating hours 87560 per year Energy loss >600,000 kwh Heat lost Q I given by ; Q= kA t Q amount of heat loss. A surface area in meter. temperature difference in degrees

17 Using Variable Speed Drive.
Chiller system Using two motors running all the time Power 30kw Total energy consumption >250,000 kwh VSD 60% reduction Value of this saving SAR 18,864

18 Dairy Products Factory
Example 2 Dairy Products Factory

19 Dairy Products Factory
Producing milk and its products. Utilities include, power, water and diesel fuel for a boiler. Boilers are old type with efficiency less than 70% New Boiler can fire both diesel and natural gas. It was recommended to replace with new boiler.

20 Current boilers achieve 90% efficiency.
Replacement will reduce energy consumption by more than 450,000 kwh annually Estimated cost will be around QR 200,000. Will be paid pack in 5 years

21 Conclusions GOIC Established Energy Savings Services and Expertise.
GCC Region has moved forward with interest in Energy Savings not only in industries but also in other sectors. Industrial Energy Savings had been strongly demonstrated by GOIC. Substantial Opportunities in Energy Savings in Industry in the region (Steam generation, Insulation, Fuel Switching in Production of Solar Energy) Additional awareness campaign and training activities is required. There is a need to look at Energy Savings in buildings.
