2 The English Pioneers The English pioneers sailed over the vast sees in reason to escape the rule of Queen Elizabeth l. They left England in search of land of opportunities where there was no monarchy. Times were hard but the long voyage was worth it because in 1607 they finally arrived and founded Jamestown, Virginia.

3 Lewis and Clark These two men were given the task to create maps, take notes of discovered plants, animals and many other important details in the western part of the United States where no English man has ever been. Meriwether Lewis and Clark headed out to find the Pacific.

4 What were the Conditions like?
But the West Indies were still some 1,500 miles south of their destination. To reach the North American mainland they had to hop from island to island, avoiding Spanish ships and negotiating with native Caribs for supplies. It would take another month or two to reach Virginia. The whole journey took about four months.

5 What were the Conditions like?
Many times Lewis and Clark had to deal with a mast being broken or having to eat greens from the shore for dinner. When they were on land for a rest mosquitoes and ticks were very troublesome.

6 Difficulties Lewis and Clark Encountered
Firstly, Lewis and Clark had a delay of 12 days for their trip because of the workers had slacked off and did a bad job of making the boats. They had to make it again until the crew could sail off. They also had to shoot down a ferocious bear that almost took out three very important crew members.

7 Difficulties the English Pioneers dealt with the shortage of food
The English pioneers did not have too much food on deck for everyone so they had to improvise. Fishing was one of their main food supplies. Many times they would not even get a complete dinner. Life on the deck of an English ship was very complicated and difficult in many situations.

8 How Lewis and Clark dealt with the problem of food
"They also had a portable, dried soup mix that they brought from Philadelphia," she added. "It was something like a concentrated meat broth, and it must have been horrible. It was very, very unpopular with the men." "They took some provisions with them," Kelsey said. "There were barrels of pork - I assume salted - that they saved for times they couldn't find game. They had flour, hominy and whiskey; biscuits - probably hard tack - and beans; coffee, sugar and dried apples. Stated by historian Mary Kelsey. Lewis and Clark also depended on Indian tribes and adaptation to available natural food.
