2 Why establish colonies?
Two major reasons: Increasing England’s wealth A chance for a new life in America

3 A New Life in the New World
Farmers were thrown off their land in the 1600s and 1700s by greedy landlords. America was a chance for them to start over. Religious freedom - worship without persecution Puritans, Catholics, Mennonites, etc. came here for this reason

4 Increasing England’s Wealth
Spain had been bringing back gold from South America and Mexico since the 1500s. The land the English settled had no gold, but it did have plenty of natural resources. Furs Timber Fishing

5 Trade with the Colonies
Raw materials sent to England Finished products sent to Africa Everyone wins!* Slaves sent to America *Except slaves

6 Mercantilism A nation becomes strong by becoming rich.
England can become rich by selling more goods to other countries (or colonies) than it buys from them. The colonies must trade only with England or face heavy fines.

7 What’s in it for the colonists?
England’s army and navy protect them from dangerous enemies. Colonists sell products to England, creating jobs and money. England’s success means success for the colonists.
