3 Extrema of a Function A function need not have a minimum or a maximum on an interval. For instance you can see that the function f(x) = x2 + 1 has both a minimum and a maximum on the closed interval [–1, 2], but does not have a maximum on the open interval (–1, 2).

4 Extrema of a Function Moreover you can see that continuity
(or the lack of it) can affect the existence of an extremum on the interval. This suggests the theorem below.

5 Relative Extrema and Critical Numbers
In Figure 3.2, the graph of f(x) = x3 – 3x2 has a relative maximum at the point (0, 0) and a relative minimum at the point (2, –4). Informally, for a continuous function, you can think of a relative maximum as occurring on a “hill” on the graph, and a relative minimum as occurring in a “valley” on the graph. Figure 3.2

9 Relative Extrema and Critical Numbers
Note in Ex. 1 that at each relative extremum, the derivative either is zero or does not exist. The x-values at these special points are called critical numbers.

10 Example 2 – Finding Extrema on a Closed Interval
Find the extrema of f(x) = 3x4 – 4x3 on the interval [–1, 2]. Begin by differentiating the function. f(x) = 3x4 – 4x3 f'(x) = 12x3 – 12x2 X Y -1 7 12x3 – 12x2 = 0 12x2(x – 1) = 0 Critical #’s are: x = 0, 1 1 -1 2 16 Maximum is f(2) = 16 and the minimum is f(1) = –1 Note: the critical numbers of a function need not produce relative extrema.

15 Rolle’s Theorem Rolle’s Theorem, named after the French mathematician Michel Rolle (1652–1719), gives conditions that guarantee the existence of an extreme value in the interior of a closed interval.

16 Rolle’s Theorem If the differentiability requirement is dropped from Rolle’s Theorem, f will still have a critical number in (a, b), but it may not yield a horizontal tangent.

17 Example 1 – Illustrating Rolle’s Theorem
Find the two x-intercepts of f(x) = x2 – 3x + 2 and show that f′(x) = 0 at some point between the two x-intercepts. Note that f is differentiable on the entire real line. Setting f(x) = 0 produces (x – 1)(x – 2) = 0 So, f(1) = f(2) = 0, and from Rolle’s Theorem you know that there exists at least one c in the interval (1, 2) such that f'(c) = 0. f′(x) = 2x – 3 Solve f′(x) = 0 Critical #: x = 3/2

Given f(x) = 5 – (4/x), find all values of c in the open interval (1, 4) such that The slope of the secant line through (1, f(1)) and (4, f(4)) is Note that the function satisfies the conditions of the Mean Value Theorem: continuous and differentiable on the interval (1,4). So, there exists at least one number c in (1, 4) such that f'(c) = 1. In the interval (1, 4), you can conclude that c = 2 x = ±2.

31 Increasing and Decreasing Functions
A function is strictly monotonic on an interval if it is either increasing on the entire interval or decreasing on the entire interval. For instance, the function f(x) = x3 is strictly monotonic on the entire real number line because it is increasing on the entire real number line. The function shown below is not strictly monotonic on the entire real number line because it is constant on the interval [0, 1].

53 Analyzing the Graph of a Function
When you are sketching the graph of a function, either by hand or with a graphing utility, remember that normally you cannot show the entire graph. For instance, which of the viewing windows below better represents the graph of f(x) = x3 – 25x2 + 74x – 20? By seeing both views, it is clear that the second viewing window gives a more complete representation of the graph. But would a third viewing window reveal other interesting portions of the graph? To answer this, you need to use calculus to interpret the first and second derivatives.

Guidelines for Analyzing the Graph of a Function. Determine the domain and range of the function. Determine the intercepts, asymptotes, and symmetry of the graph.
