Deemphasize the Negative
1. Stopping inappropriate behavior does not require screaming and yelling. Try eye contact with your child. Direct eye contact can tell your child to stop.
2. Placing your hand on your child’s shoulder is a calming touch that help calm a child who is agitated or overactive.
3. Use proximity-Move closer to your child to lessen inappropriate behavior.
4. Use hand signals to communicate with your child.
5. When possible, use planned ignoring of minor behavior.
