2 Observations An observation is the gathering of information using your five senses: Sight Smell Hearing Taste Touch

3 Types of Observations There are two types of observations: Qualitative
Quantitative

4 Qualitative Observations
Qualitative observations describe what we observe. Qualitative = quality (descriptive) These observations use adjectives to describe something.

5 Example of Qualitative Observations
The animal has big eyes. The animal has on a red tie.

6 Quantitative Observations
Quantitative observations measure what we observe. Quantitative = quantity (How many) These observations use numbers to measure something.

7 Examples of Quantitative Observations
The ladybug has six legs. The ladybug has two antennae.

8 Inferences An inference is a conclusion you have made based on your observations. Inferences are based on your past experiences and prior knowledge. Inferences often change when new observations are made.

9 Here are some examples!!! Observation: The grass on the school’s front lawn is wet. Possible Inferences: It rained. The sprinkler was on. There is dew on the grass from the morning. A dog urinated on the grass.

10 Observation: The school alarm is going off.
Possible Inferences: The school is on fire. We are having a fire drill. A student pulled the fire alarm.

11 Observation: A student is sitting in the main office.
Possible Inferences:
