1 The Need for Addressing
Lesson 2-2 AP Computer Science Principles

2 Objectives Students will be able to:
Recall that browsing the Internet entails computers sending each other requests and sending back data to satisfy those requests. Invent an informal addressing protocol for use in the Battleship game. Explain why messages need to contain addressing information (sender/recipient identification).

3 The Internet At a basic level, the Internet is just a bunch of computers talking to each other. Today, we will model how the Internet works by playing three simultaneous games of Battleship.

4 Crazy Battleship Today you’ll be playing a crazy version of the classic board game. In our version today, you will play in groups of 3 and each person will play against the other two people simultaneously! Our playing board will be much smaller and we’ll just play it with pencil and paper. In the classic game, the playing board is 10x10. We’ll be playing with a 3x3 board. The classic game is a guessing game for two people.

5 Pause! You will get to continue to play your game in a few minutes.
We are going to add a new challenge. Your team is going to have to play Battleship without talking. You will only be able to use the Internet Simulator to communicate.

6 Video

7 Continue the Game In 2 minutes you will continue the game but using the internet simulator. Decide how you will play the game using the simulator.

8 Go! No talking…

9 Pause… You have 5 minutes to revise your protocol:
What protocol have you been using? Did you have a protocol at all? How can you standardize your communication? How do you make your message as clear as possible? How do you make your message as efficient(short/easy to interpret) as possible?

10 Round 2 Play again using your new protocol.

11 Tell us all… Was your addressing information written in some sort of shorthand? Did you use initials or symbols? Where did your addressing information go? At the beginning or end of the message? Somewhere inside the message? Was your method the same for each message? Did you try out different ways of communicating addressing information in your messages?

12 Reflection Complete Unit 2 Stage 2.
