1 The Christian’s Use of the Old Testament

2 Christians and the Old Testament
Many have heard that members of churches of Christ do not believe in the OT The OT, in fact, has been done away (Rom. 7:1-6; 2 Cor. 3:6ff; Gal. 3:24-25; Eph. 2:14; Col. 2:14; Heb. 7-10) Why study the OT?

3 Points to Christ Bears witness of Christ (Lk. 4:16-21; 24:27,32,44; Jn. 1:45; 5:39-47) Brings people to Christ (Gal. 3:24-25) Preaches about Christ (Acts 2:2ff; 8:26ff; 13:26ff; 17:2,11; 18:24-28; 28:23-24) Jesus is the destination of the OT (Mt. 5:17; 26:54; Mk.14:49; Jn.7:42; 19:24,28,36,37; Rom. 3:21-22; 9:5; 10:4)

4 Shows the Unfolding Plan of God
God’s plan to save mankind begins in the OT, not the NT (Rom. 1:2; 16:26; Gal. 3:8; 1 Pet. 1:10-12) The OT is the shadow that points to the substance (Col. 2:17; Heb. 8:5; 10:1) Christians today can view the whole plan of salvation from beginning to end

5 Instructs in Salvation
The OT Scriptures can make one wise unto salvation (2 Tim. 3:15) The OT Scriptures are profitable (2 Tim. 3:16-17) The OT Scriptures were the “Bible” of the NT church

6 Provides Examples of Righteousness
The OT is full of examples of righteous faith (Heb. 11) Christians today are to follow these examples (Mt. 12:41-42; Rom. 4:23-25; Jas. 5:10,17-18) Christians are to avoid the unrighteous examples (1 Cor. 10:6-11; Heb. 4:11; 2 Pet. 2:6; Jude 7,11)

7 Warns of Disobedience The OT Scriptures show how God deals firmly with the disobedient (Acts 7:39; Heb. 2:1-3; 4:1ff; 10:28-29) God’s character remains the same (Mal. 3:6) God is both good and severe (Rom. 11:22; Deut. 7:6-11; 1 Jn. 4:8,19)

8 Warns of Satan The OT Scriptures show how Satan works to tempt mankind (Gal. 3:1ff) He works the same way today (Mt. 4:1ff; 1 Jn. 2;15-17; Rev. 12:7ff)

9 Gives Hope The OT Scriptures give hope (Rom. 15:4)
Hope of salvation from sin (Gen. 12:3) Hope of God’s promises kept (Josh. 23:14; 1 K. 8:56) Hope of God’s power and faithfulness (Deut. 7:9; Isa. 49:7) Hope of God’s reign and control (Dan. 4:17,26; Psa. 2; 110) Hope of an afterlife (Job 19:24-27)

10 Christians and the Old Testament
There are approximately 1,604 NT citations of 1,276 different OT passages! We should place the same value on the OT as the NT church did Let us avoid two extremes: The OT is binding law today The OT should not be read or studied
