STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. (Tsupros, 2009)

8 How do you define STEM in your classroom?

19 So What is Project Based Learning?
PBL is the act of learning through identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. Kids show what they learn as they journey through the unit, not just at the end.“ -Edutopia This is what we call the elevator speech of the definition. Keep in mind that this is the 50 minute version of the PBL 101. therefore, we are keeping it incredibly simple. If yopu register for out full day of PBL 101 then we will take you through a more in depth description and exploration of PBL. Our Next PBL 101 is scheduled for September 23rd

20 Project Learning is Skill-Based
To learn collaboration work in teams To learn critical thinking take on complex problems To learn oral and written communication present and write To learn creativity Create

21 PBL is Skill-Based To learn technology – use technology To develop citizenship – take on civic and global issues

22 Project Based Learning
•Case-based learning •Challenge-based learning •Community-based learning •Design-based learning •Game-based learning •Inquiry-based learning •Land-based learning •Place-based learning •Problem-based learning •Proficiency-based learning •Service-based learning •Studio-based learning •Team-based learning •Work-based learning

23 A Project Based Learning Classroom is ...
Project-centered Open-ended Real-world Student-centered Constructive Collaborative Creative Communication- focused Research-based Technology- enhanced 21st Century reform-friendly Rigorous and relevant

24 Resources for Planning PBL (Stapled pack)
Project Map/ Planner Project Contract contracts-ntn Describe what is contained in the packet. Show the contract video if time permits.

25 When I think of PBL, I think of _______________.
Reflect with a partner When I think of PBL, I think of _______________. Complete the stem on a sticky Were there similarities in answers? Differences? Surprises?

26 Airplane Activity Find a partner, and choose one piece of paper.
In teams of 2, discuss things that we could test our plane for Considering standard(s) alignment, suggested time for completion, and available materials. Complete the PBL Planner with you team mate This statement will serve as the driving question. During this time the teachers will complete their PBL planner with a timer up because you want to allow sufficient time for testing their plane.

27 Design Parameters….what are the rules?
You can only use the paper Examples: How high can it go? How long can it stay in the air? How straight can it fly? How far can it go? How accurate can it land? How many loops can it perform? Others?

28 TEST Plane ………….if time permits
