Full Project Title: “Reducing Environment Stress in the Yellow Sea Large Marine Ecosystem” AKA: Yellow Sea Project or YSLME Project Objective: Ecosystem-based Environmentally-Sustainable management and Use of the YSLME and its Watershed: Reducing Development Stress and Promoting sustainable Development of the Ecosystem from a Densely Populated, Heavily Urbanised, Industrialised Semi-Enclosed Shelf Sea Participating countries: People’s Republic of China, Republic Of Korea Duration: 5 years (2004 – 2009) Highlight that the project focuses on management, not research, but uses the results of scientific research to develop management plans.

4 Why Project? Major Perceived Water-related Environmental Issues and Problems: Decline of Commercial Fisheries, Unsustainable Mariculture Degradation of Biodiversity, Loss of Coastal Habitats, Loss or Imminent Loss of Endangered Species and their Genomes Water Quality Deterioration Poor or Unsatisfactory Human Health Quality, Unsanitary Conditions in Many Beaches and Bathing Waters, Contaminated Fish and Sea Products Harmful Algal Blooms (Emerging Disease) Inadequate Capacity to Assess Ecosystem From PDF-B Stakeholders Workshop 1999 Why is the project needed? Presentation will explain a bit about overall project, then slowly narrow focus to pollution issues and this workshop in particular.

5 Immediate Objectives Develop Regional Strategies for Sustainable Management of Fisheries and Mariculture Propose and Implement Effective Regional Initiatives for Biodiversity Protection **Propose and Implement Actions to Reduce Stress to the Ecosystem, Improve Water Quality and Protect Human Health** Develop and Pilot Regional Institutional and Capacity Building Initiatives Project objectives. Focus on pollution objective.

6 Expected Major Outcomes
Scientifically & Environmentally Sound Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) Approved Regional Strategic Action Programme (SAP) & National Yellow Sea Action Plan (NYSAP) Established Regional Framework for Co-operation Upgraded Capacities of Participating Countries Explain major outcomes of project and alert participants to keep in mind, and later understand how workshop contributes to these outcomes.

8 Pollution Component Activities
Review existing national pollutant data Critical spots, contaminant levels, inputs, pathways Regional synthesis of data input to TDA Monitoring, capacity building, information exchange, pollutant analysis and impact prediction, field survey, regional agreements Types of pollution-related activities under the Project. Activity results contribute to TDA and later to SAP.

9 Importance of Fate & Transport of Pollutants
Contribution of each type of input – atmosphere, river, land-based, sea-based Where do things go? How far do they go? Transboundary problem Focusing on this workshop, explain why f & t is an important activity. Need to understand / answer these questions. Other talks are scientific based and will give some answers. Highlight pollution is transboundary problem. What can/should we do about transboundary problem in YS?

10 Why do we need to know? SAP Action:
Diagnosis - Health and trend of Yellow Sea (TDA), e.g. level of atmospheric deposition of nutrients to the Yellow Sea Action: Cure – Strategic Action Programme (SAP), e.g. control the sources of pollutants Regional Strategy for Pollution Control: Environmental valuation of pollution control mechanisms Develop regional strategies / implementation plans to combat pollution Why do we need to know f & T? After knowing health of YS, need to take action. Workshop will give info on health. Then working session on Day 2 will suggest some actions (cures). All will contribute to regional strategies or SAP, which is ACTION to take to protect YS. SAP
