Land Grant- a grant of public land, especially to an institution, organization, or to particular groups of people. Imperial Colonization Law- guaranteed to foreigners settling in Texas security for their persons and property. Old Three Hundred-the first three hundred families that settled in Texas with Stephen F. Austin

2 Settlement issues of Texas
Mexican government needed a new policy for settling and governing Texas Mexico feared they could not protect Texas Few Tejanos wanted to live in the harsh Texas frontier new governments are generally weak Texas is opened for Anglo settlement Free land is offered

3 MOSES Austin BIO: Married with a son, born in Connecticut, involved in iron industry Settlement: West of Mississippi, was to bring families to Texas Problems with Mex. Government: At first his plan was rejected Failure because he died before he could finish the job

Austin BIO: Carried his father’s wishes to colonize a new area in Texas Info Settlement: Brought Americans to colonize Texas, known as the Old Three Hundred; was granted permission to colonize Texas under Imperial Colonization Law Problems: Santa Anna began controlling and limiting Texas Freedom; arrested for treason Colony was successful Father of Texas

6 Erasmo Seguin Bio: Helped find the first public school in San Antonio in 1812; was a representative from Texas to the 1824 Constitutional Convention Settlement: The governor requested that he inform Moses Austin that he was awarded the first contract for colonization; assisted SFA in locating area to colonize Problems with Mexico: He was expelled from his office as postmaster by Mexican authorities Success

7 Martin de Leon 1763-1833 BIO: From a wealthy family; was a rancher
Settlement: Where town of Victoria is today; only Mexican empresario to found a Texas colony; wanted to establish a Mexican-only colony Problems: Mexican officials sided on his behalf regarding ongoing boundary dispute with another empresario Success

8 Green Dewitt Bio: Born in Kentucky; considered 2nd most influential empresario after SFA Settlement info: Originally denied a land grant by the Mexican Government Problems: was accused of mishandling monies but was exonerated after being accused of mishandling public money; awarded an empresario grant to settle 400 Anglos Started out successful but due to Mex. Government he didn’t make the number needed; therefore failure

9 Hayden Edwards Bio: Came from US to be a land agent; very temperamental which leads to issues with Mexico Settlement: Settled in the Nacogdoches area Problems: Wouldn’t listen to Mexican officials so was fired from being an empresario; created his own country “Fredonia” which leads to rebellion; Sold land that was not his, but the original settlers Failure
