1 New Teacher Orientation August 25, 2016
PARCC Preparation for Math, ELA, History, Science and Technical Subjects Joel Barbarito, ELA Supervisor Diane Carroll, Math Supervisor New Teacher Orientation August 25, 2016

2 About the PARCC

3 What are the primary objectives of the PARCC Assessment System?
Determine whether students are college- and career-ready or “on track” Provide tools to assess student learning and support instruction during the school year Report growth in performance as well as absolute achievement Report comparable results across schools, districts and member states Generate valid and reliable information to inform instruction and accountability decisions Use technology for a range of purposes including increasing student access, providing accommodations, engaging students, and creating efficiencies in administration, scoring and reporting

4 Overview of PARCC Administration
One testing window in which all grades will be tested. March 27, 2017 – May 19, 2017 Grades ELA Math Total 3 4 7 4-5 6-8 6 High School

5 Five Performance Levels
PARCC uses five performance levels that delineate the knowledge, skills, and practices students are able to demonstrate: Level 1: Did Not Yet Meet Expectations Level 2: Partially Met Expectations Level 3: Approached Expectations Level 4: Met Expectations Level 5: Exceeded Expectations Place a purple frame around images

6 Mathematical Content Focus: Concentration on key topics
Coherence: Build skills within and across grade levels Rigor: Develop conceptual understanding Procedural skills and fluency Application with equal intensity

7 MATHEMATICAL PRACTICES
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure. 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

8 How PARCC has been presenting Evidence-Centered Design (ECD)
Claims Design begins with the inferences (claims) we want to make about students Evidence In order to support claims, we must gather evidence Tasks Tasks are designed to elicit specific evidence from students in support of claims ECD is a deliberate and systematic approach to assessment development that will help to establish the validity of the assessments, increase the comparability of year-to year results, and increase efficiencies/reduce costs. Confidential - Not for Distribution

9 PARCC mathematics assessments will include three types of tasks.
Task Type Description of Task Type I. Tasks assessing concepts, skills and procedures Balance of conceptual understanding, fluency, and application Can involve any or all mathematical practice standards Machine scorable including innovative, computer-based formats. II. Tasks assessing expressing mathematical reasoning Each task calls for written arguments / justifications, critique of reasoning, or precision in mathematical statements (MP.3, 6). Can involve other mathematical practice standards May include a mix of machine scored and hand scored responses. III. Tasks assessing modeling / applications Each task calls for modeling/application in a real-world context or scenario (MP.4) Can involve other mathematical practice standards.

10 Grade 4 Math- Identify the Type

11 Grade 3 Math Example- Identify the Type

12 Grade 7 Illustrative Sample Item
Grade 7 – Type ??? Grade 7 Illustrative Sample Item

13 Technology Skills Use technology to determine student understanding in authentic ways Drag and drop Shade text Cut and paste Move items Use of math tools Online calculators (6-11) Graphing tools Type written responses in ELA and Math

14 ELA Question Types EBSR = Evidence Based Selected Response
Select answer, select evidence TECR = Technology Enhanced Constructed Response Drag main idea, drag support Drag main ideas and arrange in order PCR = Prose Constructed Response (writing tasks)

15 Writing Formats Biography News/magazine articles Brochures Interviews
Editorials Letters Diaries Pamphlets Encyclopedia or Wiki entries Reports Essays Testimonials Explanations Persuasive letters

16 Writing Process PARCC Process Prezi

17 Helpful Tips Click ahead to read the prompt first
Anchor text = longest Use it in the PCR (essay) Students can annotate, eliminate answer choices, and copy/paste

18 Measuring Student Skills
Evidence Tables ELA Performance Level Descriptors Identify support in order to develop a specific claim that can be consistently maintained. Purposeful and clear organization of thoughts. Maintain tone that is appropriate to the discipline.

19 Grade 6-11 Skills District ELA teachers identified skills associated with questions types based on an examination of released items. Grade-level Skills

20 Purpose and Use of PARCC Data…
To assist teachers in supporting students To inform parents and students on progress towards “on track” college and career readiness To inform schools and districts on curricula, instructional and professional development needs High school graduation requirement starting in 2021

21 Student Scores One score for Math and one score for ELA Level
Descriptor 5 ~ Students performing at this level demonstrate a distinguished command of the knowledge, skills, and practices embodied by the NJSLS assessed at their level 4 ~ Strong command 3 ~ Moderate command 2 ~ Partial command 1 ~ Minimal command

29 PARCC Score Reports Parent Score Report
•Parents will receive their student’s score report for this year’s assessments in the fall. •Each student’s score report will indicate which performance level he or she falls into based on the score received. •The report is intended to help parents work with their child’s teachers and school officials to decide how best to support their child’s needs. •In future years, it is expected that parents will receive score reports by the end of the school year in which testing took place.
