4 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY For a newly graduate nurse to practice as a registered nurse in the Philippines, he/she must take and pass the Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) through the BON (Neri, 2009). 1

5 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY The Philippine Nursing Licensure Exam is a 500-item multiple choice exam that assesses the basic nursing level competency of nursing graduates. SCOPE OF NLE: objectives of the nursing curriculum the broad areas of nursing and other related disciplines competencies as determined by the Board of Nursing (BON) 1

6 In order to pass the NLE, the examinee must:
HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE In order to pass the NLE, the examinee must: obtain a general average of at least 75% with a rating of not below 60% in any subject Five subject component of NLE: Nursing Practice I Nursing Practice II Nursing Practice III Nursing Practice IV Nursing Practice V 1

10 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY To determine the respondents’ grades by State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the following professional nursing subjects: Anatomy and Physiology; Community Health Nursing; Pharmacology; NCM100; NCM 101; NCM 102; NCM 103; NCM 104; NCM 105; NCM 106; NCM 107-A; NCM 107-B; Intensive Nursing Practicum, Nursing Research 1 and 2; Health Assessment and TFN 1

11 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
To determine the respondent’s grades in Competency Appraisal I and Competency Appraisal II To determine the respondent’s ratings in the Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) To determine if there is a significant relationship between NLE results and graduates’ ratings in; Professional nursing subjects; Competency Appraisal I; and Competency Appraisal II; 1

12 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
To know the implications of the findings of the study to nursing curriculum HYPOTHESIS: There is no significant relationship between NLE results and graduates’ ratings in the professional nursing subjects, Competency Appraisal I and Competency Appraisal II. 1

13 Descriptive correlational method of research
HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE METHOD AND TECHNIQUES Descriptive correlational method of research TOOL FOR DATA GATHERING/TECHNIQUE DOCUMENTARY ANALYSIS 1,674 NLE first takers – June & November 2012 and June 2013 Documents: NLE Results from PRC & TOR from the Registrars Office of the selected SUCs 1

16 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
DISCUSSION Roncoli, Lisonti and Falcone (2000) found out that the higher grades in science and nursing courses increased the likelihood of success in the licensure examination. The use of admission criteria can predict future success in nursing programs and on the Licensure Examination for Nurses (Humphreys 2008) 1

17 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
DISCUSSION Neri (2009) stated that the students doing well with the in-house review have the better chances of passing the board exam, on the other hand, guided review does not significantly predict the chances of passing the board exam. 1

18 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
DISCUSSION Grossbach and Kuncel (2011) believe that standardized admissions tests were effective predictors of performance in licensure examination. Grades earned during baccalaureate degree in nursing education were especially strong predictors. The strongest predictors were grades earned during the second year. 1

19 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
DISCUSSION Ong and Palompon (2012) said that College Entrance Examination performance on IQ test, nursing aptitude test, the composite score of science, math and English tests, college grade point average and pre-board examination performance are predictors of Nurses’ Licensure Examination Performance. 1

20 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
CONCLUSIONS The nursing students performed well in the following professional nursing subjects with grades from 2.25 to 2.50; Anatomy and Physiology, Community Health Nursing, Pharmacology, NCM 100, NCM 101, NCM 102, NCM 103, NCM 104, NCM 105, NCM 106, NCM 107-A, Nursing Research I, Health Assessment, Theoretical Foundations in Nursing, Competency Appraisal I, and Competency Appraisal II. 1

21 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
Nursing students showed better performance in the following subjects: NCM 107-B, Intensive Nursing Practicum and Nursing Research II. The passing rate of the students in the Nursing Licensure Examination ranges between percent with the over-all average of percent. The grades of the students in the 17 professional nursing subjects vary among the school respondents, and they serve as determinants in passing the nursing licensure examination. 1

22 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
On the average, majority of the professional nursing subjects were determinant to passing the NLE which comprises of the following subjects: Anatomy and Physiology, Community Health Nursing, NCM 100, NCM 101, NCM 103, NCM 104, NCM 105, NCM 106, NCM 107-B, Research I, Research II, and Competency Appraisal II The following subjects were considered as not determinant to passing the NLE such as Pharmacology, NCM 102, NCM 107-A, and Competency Appraisal I. 1

23 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
Significant relationship between NLE and professional nursing subjects exists because the grades in different subjects obtained by the respondents and their performance in the NLE showed a similar trend and that is, grades in each subject correspond to the lower ratings in NLE. 1

24 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
RECOMMENDATIONS The good performance of the students in different professional nursing subjects should be strengthened by the mentoring/coaching of the instructors to their students to elevate their performance in each subject, since their performance in the nursing subjects will serve as determinants to their NLE performance. 1

25 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
Instructors are encouraged to prepare and administer diagnostic examinations in each subject to determine the entry point of discussion to overcome difficulties encountered by the students especially for the subjects included in Nursing Practice III, IV and V of the NLE. 1

26 HONORING THE PAST, INSPIRING THE FUTURE
Subjects with significant relationship with the NLE should further be strengthened; subjects that were insignificant should be revisited and be given special attention in terms of content of course syllabus specifically to the subjects included in the Nursing Practice II, IV, V. The subject Pharmacology should be revisited due to its insignificant correlation in all scope of NLE such as Nursing Practice I, II, II, IV, and V. Modification of the scope of this subject may be recommended, since it plays a vital role in the nursing practice by limiting the cases of medication errors. 1
