7 Product Compliance Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA)

8 Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association
Who is BHMA? Founded in 1925 as Hardware Manufacturers’ Statistical Association Nationally Recognized Door Hardware Trade Association Role is to ensure quality and performance of builders hardware BHMA is ANSI Approve to Write Standards Standards are Performance Based – Tests are performed under laboratory conditions Uses Nationally Recognized Test Labs (NRTL) to Certify Products 80% of U.S. builders hardware manufacturers are BHMA members 70% of Customers & Architects Specify BHMA Certified Products Provides Allegion with Competitive Advantage

10 UL (Underwriters Laboratories)
Who is UL? Established in Nationally Recognized Test Lab (NRTL) UL is a global independent safety science company with over a century of expertise Tests Products to Meet Building Code/ Life Safety Requirements Most Widely Accepted by Consumers Codes Require Doors and Hardware to be Labeled Building Inspectors Look for the UL Label Presence of the UL Label is Proof of Compliance Product Modification or Misapplication Voids the UL Label. UL focuses on Product Safety where BHMA focuses on Product Durability and Strength

11 Building Codes and Hillsdale

12 How Building/Fire Codes Drive Hardware Design and Certification
Codes may specifically designate design/performance criteria such as California Building Code (3) – “The actuating portion of the releasing device shall extend at least one-half of the door leaf width” (4) – “The maximum unlatching force shall not exceed 15 pounds (67 N)” 11B – “Operable parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate operable parts shall be 5 pounds (22.2 N) maximum.” CBC was directly responsible for the initial development of the AX option for exits Almost all current Allegion NPD projects have some form of ADA compliance as a design requirement

13 How Building/Fire Codes Drive Hardware Design and Certification
Codes may specifically designate industry standards like UL and/or ANSI/BHMA IBC (1) – “Panic hardware shall be listed in accordance with UL305” IBC (2) – “Fire exit hardware shall be listed in accordance with UL10C and UL305” CBC – “Full-power-operated doors shall comply with BHMA A Power-assisted and low-energy doors shall comply with BHMA A156.19” NFPA 80 – “Continuous hinges shall be labeled and shall meet the requirements of ANSI/BHMA A156.26, American National Standard for Continuous Hinges.” The performance criteria within these standards helps to create design criteria for new products and features
