1 Section 5.3(c) Synthetic Division

2 or, using synthetic division: Set-up
Just watch: Divide: 16t + 122 or, using synthetic division: Set-up 3 Coefficients Divisor +48 +366 (t - 3) 16 +122 +371 “r” = 3 16•3 = 48 122•3 = 366

3 9.) Divide: x4 + x3 - 13x2 - 25x - 12 ÷ (x - 4)
Note: No remainder means the factor divides exactly

4 10.) Divide:

5 11.) Divide:

6 12.) Dividing by a fraction: (8x3 - 1) ÷ (2x - 1)
Put the divisor in the form (x - r) (1x - r) Divide by 2 But…..divide everything by 2 (4x3 - 1/2) ÷ (x - 1/2)

7 12.) (cont.) From last page: (4x3 - 1/2) ÷ (x - 1/2) Don’t forget the
place holders /2

8 12.) (cont.) Check If: (8x3 - 1) ÷ (2x - 1) = ( 4x2 + 2x + 1)
From last page: Check If: (8x3 - 1) ÷ (2x - 1) = ( 4x2 + 2x + 1) Then: (8x3 - 1) = ( 4x2 + 2x + 1)•(2x -1 ) (4x2 + 2x + 1)•(2x - 1) = 8x3 + 4x2 + 2x - 4x2 - 2x - 1 = 8x3 - 1
