2 Prof. G.D. Sondhi is the man who conceive the asiad movement and turned it into a reality.
He was the President of Amateur Athletic Federation and also member of I.O.C.

3 The inaugural Asiad was originally schedule to he had in 1950
First Asian Games were held from March 4-11,1951 in New Delhi India.

4 To begin with there were six disciplines in which competition was held in the NATIONAL STADIUM.
Track and Field event for men and women, cycling, weightlifting, basketball, and football for men only.

5 Opening Ceremony

6 The national stadium was packed with 40,000 spectators and sportsmen.
The first Asiad had a truly historical colorful, catching and thrilling opening ceremony. The national stadium was packed with 40,000 spectators and sportsmen.

7 The sacred flame of the games was lit by the sun rays with the help of a lens at the historical RED FORT. The honour of becoming the first Asian Games torch bearer fell on the 53 years old Brig. Dilip Singh, an olympion of 1924 and 1928.

8 There are eleven rings round the flag of the Asian Games federation.
The background of the flag is white, indicating peace.

9 OATH “In the name of all competitors I promise that we shall take part (name of the Asiad) respecting and abiding by the rules which govern then without the use of doping and drugs in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sports and the honor of our teams.”

11 HIGHLIGHTS OF FIRST ASIAN GAMES
India being host naturally entered the biggest contingent of 165 sports persons. The hero of men’s track events was India’s Iavy Pinto crowned the fastest man in Asia. The smallest contingents from Ceylon consisted of 3 members. Japan at top of the medal tally with 24 Gold. The swimming events for men only. Eleven Countries participated in Asia’s biggest sports festival.

13 The president of Asian Game Federation declared the “Games closed”
The flame slowly flickered out.
