1 Intranet and Internet Based Groupware and Workflow
Pertemuan 8

2 Introduction The growth of intranets and the Internet as a means of deploying applications represents one of the most dramatic changes in the history of computing. The market for services in this area has grown from zero to over $1 billion in a few years(according to research by Zona Research, Redwood City.) Web browsers make a great platform for sharing documents and managing tasks. They give familiarity, ease of use and simplicity

3 Introduction A 1997 survey by the Meta Group of 55 companies, mainly taken from the top 200 Fortune companies, showed that intranets were delivering average Return on Investment of 38 %. This figure was higher when companies had developed intranets which went beyond information publishing to collaboration or interactive applications. This combination, plus their low cost and the ease of deploying applications surely represents the future for all groupware and workflow applications

4 Why Intranets ? Intranets have become populer for exactly the same reasons that groupware has been used, they are good for helping collaboration and communication in a business. In particular, intranets are very good for sharing information between staff. Plus they have two benefits that traditionally groupware has not had : intranets are quick and cheap to set up! Through intranet enabled groupware these familiar applications are possible : Publishing Information, ,Shared document authoring, text and video conferencing, Electronic meetings, and workflow

5 Why Intranets ? Intranet based workflow to date has mainly focused on administrative workflow such as ordering internal supplies, booking holidays or travel claims. Many companies start to use intranets as a means of increasing the availability of information, while at the same time reducing the cost of producing it and managing it. Opportunities for sharing information include:

6 Why Intranets ? Opportunities for sharing information include:
Staff directories and organization charts Company standards and working procedures such as performing customer care. Personal information such as staff handbooks Company financial performance reporting traditionally handled by Executive Information Systems and communications/news from management to staff Marketing Information-customer information and sales information including access to data warehouses and datamarts Product Information, e.g. price catalogs, technical sheets. In fact, anything which is already held as document or as part of database can be accessed via an intranet and web browser.

7 Why Intranets ? intranet groupware offers further benefits which it shares with the web : It is relatively quick to author web content in comparison with developing traditional business applications. Simple web publishing can be accomplished by anyone who can use a word processor. Web browsers provide an easy to use graphical environment popular with user. It is easy to use since navigation between documents can happen by clicking on hyperlinks or images.

8 Why Intranets ? intranet groupware offers further benefits which it shares with the web : Browsers provide a cross platform medium for delivering applications, which is important for large corporations who may need to support a range of web clients on Windows PCs, Macintoshes and Unix workstations to access the same information or run the same application Lower support and ownership costs exist for a company since browsers are relatively easy to configure and administer compared to other client/server applications each with a proprietary client. Reduced hardware purchase costs There are a large and growing number of people using the web.

12 Difficult Choices When Implementing Intranet Based Groupware
Do we need a web-enabled groupware package to set up an intranet? We already use a groupware client. Should we swap to a web browser client? Which browser should we adopt? Should we host our intranet externally? Who owns the intranet? What bandwidth do I need?
