1 67. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE “Figurative Language are words and expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation.”

2 Figurative Language is important because it uses figures of speech to be more effective, persuasive, and impactful. Look at the Christiana Rossetti poem, I Loved You First But Afterwards Your Love for examples.

3 Figurative language is also important because it describes something by using an example. It ‘Paints a Picture’ in your mind by using Similes, Metaphors, and Personification (See the Next 2 Presentations).

4 Poetry is Figurative To introduce Figurative Language, let’s look at 3 Grammar Terms: Synonym Antonym Homonym These terms help students describe and create poems.

5 Figurative Language: SYNONYM
A Synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly the same as another word.

6 Figurative Language: ANTONYM
An Antonym is a word that means the exact opposite of another word.

7 Figurative Language: HOMONYM
Homonyms are two words having the same pronunciation but different meaning.

8 A poetic form that shows the synonyms and antonyms is the Diamante
A poetic form that shows the synonyms and antonyms is the Diamante. These poems have a very interesting format.
