Good afternoon! Sit in your assigned group for today indicated by the list of names located on each group of desks Make sure you have your Artifact Notebook out. We will be starting an activity at the bell so be in your seat and ready to hear instructions. We are on BYOD Red for now. In your notebook please label Journal #6: Line of Reasoning

Perspectives & Line of Reasoning Activity
Directions: You will each be given one picture face-down on your desk. When you receive It look carefully at your picture but DO NOT share its contents with anyone else. As a class your goal will be to put yourselves in the correct order around the room WITHOUT sharing your picture. **You may describe it, but do not actually show the picture to anyone else!** I will tell you when to begin and you will be timed. You must collaborate to get this done, so work together both effectively and efficiently.

Introduction For the next 3-5 minutes, discuss with your neighbor:
What do you know about Ronald Reagan (the president, his administration, personal details, etc.)? What do you know about the Cold War? What do you know about the 1980’s as an era in American history? If you have NO INFORMATION about any of these topics, find some! Discuss with your neighbor, use your device to research (credible sources), and make sure you have a valuable contribution.

Cold War Period of tension and hostility between USA and USSR (Soviet Union, Russia, Soviet Russia, Communist Russia, etc.) “Cold” because there wasn’t actual shooting, but lots of proxy wars (Korea, Vietnam) and crises (Cuban Missile Crisis, U-2 spy plane incident) Space Race was part of the Cold War; winning the space race was seen as a measure of national pride

While watching take notes on what you see/hear in terms of different lenses and perspectives. You will be discussing, so you MUST HAVE notes off which you can base your conversations.

Line of Reasoning College Board definition: arrangement of claims and evidence that leads to a conclusion Line of reasoning is about understanding the overall thesis, how the author uses evidence to support it, and how cohesively claims and evidence flow to prove the overall thesis. Group Task (4 per group) – 10 minutes
You have learned a little bit about the Reagan presidency, the Star Wars missile defense program, and the idea of a line of reasoning. You have been given an editorial with the various paragraphs cut out. Using what you think is the best possible line of reasoning, glue it back together on the poster paper provided. Closest to the original order gets a prize! Remember: Overall thesis (sometimes explicit, sometimes implicit) Claims Evidence Flow and cohesion

Reflection Having seen the original author’s order, discuss: Why is evaluating a line of reasoning an important skill? How can you apply it in your daily life / academic life / future professional life / etc.? How can understanding line of reasoning improve your writing? Public speaking? Argumentation? How can you hone your skills in evaluating the effectiveness of a line of reasoning, whether from an editorial, speech, or any other medium?

“Seminar Tree” We will use this to help organize our thoughts as it pertains of the line of reasoning. Here is a suggested format to create your tree: Trunk = claims Branches = sub-claims Leaves = evidence Birds = counterclaims Roots = context Sky=themes

Article reveal I am now going to give you a copy of the original article in the correct order. With your groups use this article to create a Seminar Tree. Each person needs to create their own tree, but you can look for the claims, sub-claims, etc. as a group. Homework: Finish your seminar tree and bring it in the next time we meet. Remember to put time and effort into it. This should be something you would be willing to present to the class.

Good Afternoon! Take out your Seminar Trees and your article annotations. As a group, you will be given a few minutes to share and compare your trees. Did you all agree on the major claims, themes, evidence, etc.?? If there was discrepancy, what areas did your findings differ? (5 MINUTES)

Stream of Consciousness
Stream of Consciousness is a free-associative writing activity. In my 14 years of experience, this activity has been the most fruitful for activating confidence both in my student's thinking as well as their writing. The activity is simple. A word will be written on the board. On a blank piece of computer paper, write down the flow of thoughts you associate with that word. You are encouraged to think in sentences, and to write those thoughts as you think them. Another word will be added; Simply continue streaming your thoughts by making new associations given the new word. Continue this process until the end of the stream. (10 words) The key to activating yourself in this activity is to remove all inhibitions from your thinking, and to allow yourself to write whatever you think without worry of right or wrong. Recursive Writing: Re-read, Revise, and Refine
Your goal before next class will be to review your 2nd Stream of Consciousness. Revise and refine your thoughts so as to form a coherent, cohesive line of reasoning from start to finish. Once you have done so, post your revision to this Discussion Board.

Searching for LOR You will now be given an article. As you read, you must annotate for the following: a.The central claims: What position(s) is the article taking? (Highlight any claims.) b. What data or evidence does the author present to support the claim? (Underline the evidence presented) c. What is the reasoning or warrant the author gives to demonstrate that the evidence supports the claim? [Use brackets to identify reasoning] d. What are any prevailing themes that emerge? What is it's context? e. Identify any lenses or perspectives that would be appropriate based on the article. f. Develop at least two discussion questions based on the articles. Discussion questions should be thought-provoking and require more than a one word answer.
