3 What is structure? Structure refers to how we put something together
When we ‘put together’ a text, our structure is our words, sentences and paragraphs We looked at words in the last lesson; today it’s sentences and paragraphs

5 Sentences – three main types
Simple These are short, basic sentences: I went to the shop. Compound These are two simple sentences joined together: I went to the shop and I bought some sweets. Complex These contain two or more parts but at least one isn’t a complete simple sentence: I went to the shop to buy some sweets.

Simple – to show a simple point. It also used to show an important point. By putting it on its own in a small sentence, it will stand out. Compound – to expand a previous idea Complex - to expand a previous idea too. It is also used for more detailed description. France has amazingly high mountains with snow- covered peaks. You can see them in the Alps and you can see them in the Pyrenees. They are spectacular.

They could be short, important, simple sentences. They could be longer, more detailed compound sentences. They could be detailed complex sentences with description…

They are grouped sentences about similar ideas. A new idea means a new paragraph
