In the face of tectonic hazards that threaten their homes, communities and livelihoods, individuals have three basic choices: Do nothing Adjust/Modify Leave

3 Hazard Response and Management
Adjustment or modification is usually the preferred method of coping. It usually takes one of three forms: Modify the loss Modify human vulnerability Modify the event/cause Increasingly technological Task: where on the Park Model would these take place?

Type of response depends upon: Magnitude of the hazard Number of people involved (pop density) Past experience Frequency of the hazard Economic ability to act Technology Perceptions of decision makers infrastructure Degree of preparedness Geographical accessibility Climate Scientific understanding Perceptions of those affected Type of landscape (mountains etc) Knowledge of options available Education/training Government competence Sort these into physical and human factors.

5 The Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies , supported by the International Federation, work with communities to reduce risk, mitigate the effects of, prepare to respond, respond to and recover from disasters. Disaster Management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters.

8 Four Phases of Emergency Management
The plan is based on the Four Phases of Emergency Management: Mitigation - efforts to reduce hazards or its impacts Preparedness - efforts to prepare for a likely hazard Response - actions taken to respond to an emergency or disaster Recovery - actions taken to restore the community to pre-disaster condition Task: classify the strategies on the sheet and identify where in the DRMC they would be used.
