1 Integumentary system Skin Nails Hair Sweat glands

2 What is the largest organ in your body?
Your Skin Skin covers 20 square feet of surface of the average adult weighs approximately 6 pounds.

3 Four Functions of the Skin
1) Skin is your body's largest organ and first line of defense against disease 2) Skin keeps in vital body fluids and keeps out most dirt and microorganisms. Skin helps you be responsive to the world around you.

4 Functions of Skin 3) Temperature is maintained with help from your skin. When it gets too hot, your sweat glands release moisture to cool off the skin by evaporation; or when it gets cold, your surface blood vessels contract to trap the body heat inside.

5 4th Function of Skin 4) Your skin tells you about the world around you. Nerve endings in your skin allow you to feel things. (Frying pan, bunny)

6 Trait that makes you unique
Fingerprints, which are contained in the skin. Skin also manufacturers vitamin D for strong bones and teeth.

7 Layers of Skin Skin is made of three layers each with its own function. Epidermis: The layer of skin we see is divided into the horny and basal layers Keratin, a waterproof protein, is produced in the basal layer. Skin color is the result of the production of melanin in the epidermal layer.

8 2nd Layer of Skin Dermis:
The second layer of skin is much thicker than the first. The dermis provides support for the epidermis and makes stretching possible. Nerve ends, blood vessels, oil and sweat glands, and muscles are in the layer.

9 3rd Layer of Skin Subcutaneous Tissue:
This layer, of mostly fat, acts as an cushion to protect your internal organs from shocks and insulates your body from heat loss. This layer is quite thick in some areas, but is missing in others (eye-lids)

10 Skin conditions There are more than 1500 identified skin conditions, two of which we will discuss.  Acne Skin cancer

11 ACNE Acne as we know is also known as pimples or zits. They are caused by overactive oil glands, which block the surface ducts. Acne is usually outgrown. It's not fatal---just a blow to the self-image.

12 Skin Cancer: Skin cancer is almost 100% preventable with common sense. Over 40,000 new cases a year, of which 9,000 of them will die, making skin cancer the most common type of human cancer.

13 Well over 3/4 of skin cancer occurs on body areas not normally protected by clothing--face, forearms, hands.

14 Since people have become sunbathers, the back, chest, and legs are developing more cancer sites. When skin is exposed to sunlight, it soaks up ultraviolet rays, which cause burning, or tanning. Now with the forecast every day they also give the ultraviolet readings.

15 People who burn easily, have fair skin with red or blond hair, and light eyes are more prone to develop skin cancer. Those who receive excessive amounts of sun are likely candidates in later years for skin cancer.

16 There are three major types of skin cancer
1. Basal cell carcinoma 2. Squamous cell carcinoma 3. Malignant melanoma

17 Basal cell carcinoma slow growing cancer that can grow and destroy underlying tissues. It might start as a small pearly bump on the head, hand or neck with an indented center rolled border. Usually not life threatening.

18 Squamous cell carcinoma
may start as a red patch with a clearly defined border or a hard nodule. This can spread to other areas of the body from the original site ( lips, face, tips of ears) and can grow very large if not treated. Usually not life threatening.

19 Malignant melanoma May begin in or near moles on exposed areas. It has an irregular border and may be multicolored or brown-black with some red. Melanoma can spread throughout the body if left untreated. This is very life threatening if not treated right away.

20 A B C D rule A= Asymmetrical--the two halves are not the same
B= Border irregularity--edges ragged or blurred C= Color--uneven pigment with shades of tan, brown, black, and some red, white, or blues. D= Diameter--increase in size of a mole to over 6 mm (pencil eraser)

21 How to Treat Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is treated with surgery, freezing, radiation or electric current depending on the size and location of the cancer. Plastic surgery may be required if the appearance is drastically altered by the other treatments .

22 How do you keep from getting skin cancer?
Use common sense=use sun-screen when in the sun, avoid the strongest rays of the sun--10-3, and cover up by wearing hats and long sleeved shirts and pants.

23 Sunscreens are very effective if used properly
Sunscreens are very effective if used properly. SPF=sun protection factor tells you how much protection you are getting from the rays. Higher the number the greater the protection.

24 The skin is a wonderful organ that deserves all the care and protection you can give it. Remember, almost all skin cancer is preventable. Use good common sense--don't expose yourself to the sun, wear sunscreen and dare to be fair

25 Hair: Hair grows faster than any other part of
you. The hair shaft, the part that you can see, is made of dead cells that overlap each other. It is the shape of the hair shaft that determines the overall appearance of your hair. Approximately 125,000 hairs grow in the scalp with 45 being lost every day.

26 Hair color comes from the melanin cells, and is passed through your parents’ genes. Taking care of your hair is very simple. You just need to wash it and brush it regularly

27 Hair and scalp problems:
Dandruff is the flaking of the outer layer of dead skin cells. It is very common and is usually caused by a dry scalp. Lice are tiny insects that live in the hair. Head lice are very common and easy to catch from someone else. It is not life threatening, but does cause you to use a special shampoo and you will have to wash all things around you. Never share combs and brushes with other people.
