Grab the audience’s attention in some way.
Hook Grab the audience’s attention in some way. The key is to say something that the reader can relate to by bringing the theme of the novel you are discussing to the forefront Consider using the following: A Quote A general statement A question It is not easy to think of how to make someone want to read an essay about a novel. It’s not even easy to make them want to read some novels. Note I have provided for you a sheet with a bunch of theme ideas and examples!!!!
5
Introduce Topic Include relevant details about the author Introduce the text Address assigned topic directly
6
Europe, tell your reader a little about 18th century Europe.
Set Context Introduce the social, political, cultural, historical, power and/or gender context. This is where you give your reader any information they need to know in order to understand your essay. For example: If your novel is set in 18th century Europe, tell your reader a little about 18th century Europe.
7
Build into thesis statement
This is a transitional word or phrase that links your thesis with the rest of your paragraph. Think of this as a bridge between your context and your thesis.
8
Thesis Statement This is the statement of your opinion on the topic, expressing a direct answer to the essay question. THIS IS THE HEART AND SOUL OF YOUR ESSAY! Your thesis gives your essay direction. Without a clear thesis statement, your reader does not know what you are writing about.
9
Line of Approach This indicates to the reader how you will go about supporting (or illustrating ) your thesis. Never say simply that you will use “examples from the text” to support your thesis. This should list the three ways (your three main points) of how you will demonstrate (show) your thesis statement to be true.
10
Remember Provide a clear thesis that is understood by your entire audience Identify the supporting points/information in your line of approach. Remember not every member of your audience will have read your text

Introduction Paragraph 1
Body-checking has always been a controversial issue. However, the recent decision of Hockey Canada to allow some hockey associations to permit body-checking among players as young as nine years of age, on an experimental basis, has aggravated the controversy quite considerably in recent months. Canada’s decision to allow body- checking in some junior games, even on an experimental basis, is a serious mistake. Perspectives fall into three main categories: viewpoints of fans, the official stand point of Hockey Canada, and positions held by the scientific community.

Introduction Paragraph 2
“What bloody man is that?”(I,i,3 ), enquires Duncan, King of Scotland in Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. Duncan in these, his first words in the play, provides the reader with the first of many images based on blood. Shakespeare uses blood imagery to support the theme of violence in Macbeth. This relationship of blood imagery and violence is manifested in Banquo’s ghost, Lady Macbeth’s guilt, and Macbeth’s ultimate demise.
