Pocket folders in two colors for partner. (ex. green and red) Numbered to assign reading partners.
2 sets of passages in each folder. One for the reader and one for the partner.
A fluency graph to record individual scores.
Pencil to follow along and mark as they read and highlighter to mark fluency chart.
Get Ready
Teacher announces that fluency timing will begin.
Student with green folders move to their partner.
Red student removes green student’s colored passage from fluency folder to follow along.
Green student takes out their white reading passage. The passage number is highlighted at the top.
Teacher monitors that students are ready to begin

6. One Minute Partner 1 (green) Reads
Teacher sets the timer for 1 minute and says, “Begin.”
Partner 1 (green) reads until the timer sounds.
Partner 2 (red) marks Partners 1 (green) reading errors with a slash and stopping point with a bracket on his copy of the fluency passage.

7. One Minute Partner 2 (red) Gives Feedback STARS and WISHES
Partner 2 (red) tells Partner 1 (green) how many words he/she read, the number of errors he/she made and tells Partner 1 (green) what he/she did well as a reader and what he/she might work on.
Partner 1 (green) records CWPM correct words per minute on the fluency record form in his/her pocket folder.
Partner 2 (red) erases pencil markings so fluency passage is ready for the next day.

8. One Minute Partner 2 (red) Reads
Teacher sets the timer for 1 minute and says, “Begin.”
Partner 2 (red) reads until the timer sounds.
Partner 1 (green) marks Partner 2 (red) reading errors with a slash and stopping point with a bracket on his copy of the fluency passage.

9. One Minute Partner 1 (green) Gives Feedback STARS and WISHES

10. One Minute Students Put Away Materials
All students quietly put materials back in their pocket folder
Partner 1 (green) quietly return to their desk.
All students pass their folders to the front of the room.
Either one student or the teacher puts the pocket folders away until the next day.

11. How To Do the Reading

12. Stars and Wishes (Polite Feedback)
While the reader is reading aloud for one minute, the fluency partner follows along and marks any errors. When the timer sounds, the partner notes the last word read with a bracket, then provides polite feedback in the following manner.
Partner: “You read __________(total of) words. I heard _______(number of) errors. The partner points to each marked (incorrect) word and pronounces it correctly for the reader. The partner asks the reader to repeat the word correctly.
Reader: Records the CWPM (correct words per minute) on the Fluency Graph.
Note: “No arguing” rule between partners.

15. Friday 6 - 8 minutes to read the complete passage and write a summary.
The summary is graded on a 6 point rubric.
