Creating and implementing online learning modules through teacher web pages.
Norman Conklin

In the 21st century classroom, meeting the needs of a diverse student body is contingent upon diversifying and individualizing instruction. One of the most beneficial ways to diversify instruction is with the aid of online learning communities. Online learning communities as well as their format allows for anytime anywhere instruction that accommodates the learning needs of students. By blending both traditional education and online learning modules it is possible to create a very diversified instructional model that utilizes the best of both worlds.

Most online learning formats are very different in appearance yet embody exactly the same concepts.
Most formats are designed to vaguely mimic traditional education and provide links to access important documents announcements or baskets or work submission

All online formats will provide the learner with links to access the various portions of the course and help develop a set of behavioral patterns that orient the learner to the demands of online instruction. Over time learners accustomed to traditional education will acclimate to navigating their courses and meeting the deadlines posted on their course homepage.

Online education or at least components of it can be intertwined into k-12 education to provide a truly unique and active learning environment that can serve multiple functions --High levels of engagement --Credit recovery --Reading recovery --Home bound student education --Accommodate students with learning disabilities or ELL students --Maintaining quality instruction during teacher absence --Incorporation of 21st century skills Quite honestly there is limitless potential uses when blending traditional education with online learning environments . The remainder of this presentation will illustrate how a simple tool like a teachers web page can be used as an agent to blend both traditional and online learning experiences to maximize student achievement.

I have modeled much of my school webpage to mimic portions of Moodle and Walden’s ecampus to maximize my students learning and provide them multiple avenues to access content and communicate with me.

Notice the similarities

In an online setting regardless of time a person can download and visit links to important documentation, learning objectives, and schedule of classroom activities/deadlines By making similar additions to my 9-12th grade science courses I have bolstered my communications to students to emphasize my expectations in class Mine Walden

Mine Walden By hosting online discussion threads you can address student questions beyond the classroom walls and incorporate student collaboration well beyond the seat time in a typical classroom day. Students work together outside of school in various activities such as tutoring, study sessions, assignment questions and sharing of student work

Walden’s Mine In addition to real time online collaboration the sharing of documents and various video files also increases student success because loss , damage or truancy in regards to essential coursework is not a setback. All work is posted and can be re-downloaded.

The real struggle with incorporating these tools is the resistance that you may encounter from colleagues. Many will argue that we have removed student responsibility Some will argue that the time required for professional development is too intensive. Many schools may face technological barriers in addition to technological equity issues Yet the potential benefits gained by integrating an online format with your traditional classroom will truly be your best avenue for differentiating instruction with a realistic amount of work load and man power. From personal experience in finishing a masters at Walden University and adding many of the same online components to my class that many online classes utilize, I can only say that the future of my instruction will seek to blend more of this style of instruction with the very best of traditional methods.
