Wake-up Explain the difference between a atom and a molecule.
Water is said to be polar. Explain what this means.

Properties of Water Christopherson

Draw three molecules of water
Draw three molecules of water. Add a positive and negative charge to the appropriate atoms. Connect the molecules of water together.

Water molecules tend to stick to things

What is Cohesion?

Cohesion Occurs when water molecules are attracted to other water molecules; they stick together.

What are some examples of COHESION within nature?

What is Surface Tension?

Surface Tension Occurs when molecules on the surface of a liquid are attracted to each other; Cohesion of the surface

What are some examples of SURFACE TENSION within nature?

What is Adhesion?

Adhesion Occurs when water molecules are attracted to other surfaces; they don’t stick together.

What is Capillary Action?

Capillary Action Occurs when adhesion and cohesion work together to move liquids upward between close surfaces

What does this have to do with Chromatography?
Chromatography is the process in which substances or mixtures are separated by “liquid” means. The small spaces (pores of the paper) provide adhesion to the water. As the water is pulled up, the colors of the markers are separated. Colors separate by densities. Less dense colors go to the top.

What are some examples of CAPILLARY ACTION within nature?
