2. Ethnicities in Algeria
Ancestors mainly of Berber origins
Berber refers to any of the descendants of pre-Arab inhabitants of Northern Africa
Some traces of European descendants (French or Spanish)
Greatly of Sub-Saharan African ancestry
Sub-Saharan Africa is parts of Africa lying south of the Sahara desert
Skin color and other features vary greatly between families

3. Organization of Families
The Family Unit is considered the most important unit of the Algerian society.
Family comes before anything else which means: (they are big on loyalty and honor)
Households consist of extended family
All major decisions made by the Senior male in the house.
Women spend their lives under male authority
(first by their father and then husband)
Marriages are almost always arranged
Arranged marriages are beneficial to the family
Factors taken into account:
1.Family Reputation
2. Wealth
3. Values/Tradition/Religion
4. Education/ Family’s class
End result would be to strengthen an already existing family

Population in 1950s: 8,872,247
Population Growth Rate: 1.7%
Drop in infant mortality rates = decline in overall death rates
Current population: 40,969,443 people (July 2017)
⅓ of population is 15 or younger
Average age= 28.1 years
After independence from France (1962), fertility rates dropped from 7 children/woman (1970s) to children/ woman (present)
Gov. focused on family planning to regulate population
Average woman's age (1st marriage )
19 years (1950s)
24 years (1970s)
30.5 years (1990s)
Later marriage/ smaller families = better educations & increase in participation in labor market for women

5. Free Time Soccer is a major sport Algerians play and speak about.
Algerians listen to and play Rai music.
During the month of ramadan, Muslims fast during the daylight hours.
Following the month of Ramadan there is a feast celebrated with family.
