Republican from Ohio Elected in 1896; again in 1900 defeating William J. Bryan both times Led U.S. during the Spanish-American War Agreed to buy Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines; later annexed the Philippines which led to a war there Set up a protectorate over Cuba

Shot by Leon Czolgosz (an anarchist) in September 1901 McKinley is replaced by his Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt (youngest person to serve as President) From New York; was a complete renaissance man

Roosevelt was a Progressive Progressives wanted to fix social problems Believed the government should step in to fix these problems Trust-busting: Most progressives believed big business needed to be regulated Created the Department of Commerce and Department of Labor to monitor big business Passed the Pure Food and Drug Act (1906) to protect consumers from impure or falsely labeled food and drugs. Conservation: Roosevelt’s “stamp” on the presidency established many National Parks and urged people to use resources wisely

Look through chapter 8 Find one issue that would have upset a Progressive that you would like to research Run your idea by Ms. Brennan Create a political cartoon that brings attention to your issue On a separate piece of the paper answer the following questions: 1) What was your issue? 2) Describe your cartoon. What is it showing? 3) Why do you believe your issue got the attention of Progressives in the early 1900’s? 4) Was anything done to solve your issue in real-life? 5) What do you believe would be a suitable solution to your issue? 6) Were the Progressives right or wrong in their attempts to monitor people’s lives? Should the government legislate morality?

25 Taft’s Presidency Brought twice as many anti-trust lawsuits as Roosevelt 1911 – Suit against US Steel over purchase of Tennessee Coal and Iron Company in 1907 T.R. approved this purchase T.R. believed the best way to deal with trusts was to let them exist but to regulate them Taft was destroying this balance
